Chapter 4 - The House of Glass Breaks

Three days later, the legal apparatus moved with the devastating precision of a military strike.

Vanessa had tried to return to the house, only to be met by two local police officers and my corporate legal counsel, who served her with formal divorce papers citing extreme physical and psychological abuse, financial fraud, and conspiracy to commit real estate forgery.

When she tried to scream, wave her diamond-studded hands, and threaten the officers with her high-society connections, the senior detective simply pulled out a tablet and played a thirty-second clip of her striking my mother across the face with the wooden spoon.

The color drained from her face. The arrest warrant for domestic assault, elder abuse, and attempted extortion was executed on the spot.

She was hauled away in handcuffs, her designer silk coat dragging against the concrete driveway as the neighborhood watched from behind drawn curtains.

Back at the hospital, my mother was discharged and brought directly to a temporary, secure suite in a quiet residential facility near my office while our main house underwent a complete forensic sweep and security overhaul.

Elena had refused to leave my mother's side. Even after everything, the brave young woman continued to care for Mom with a gentleness and devotion that brought tears to my eyes.

On a bright Thursday afternoon, I sat across from Elena at a small wooden table in the facility’s sunroom while Mom slept peacefully in the adjoining room.

The bandage above Elena’s eyebrow had been removed two days earlier, leaving only a faint, thin pink line that faded into her skin.

— Elena, I said, sliding a thick manila folder across the table toward her.

She looked down at the folder, hesitating before opening it. — What is this, Mr. Daniel?

— Open it, I urged gently.

Elena’s fingers trembled slightly as she pulled the heavy cardstock documents from the folder. Her eyes scanned the first page, and her breath caught sharply in her throat.

It wasn't a termination notice.

It was a full scholarship grant for her remaining two years at the state university to complete her degree in social work, accompanied by a permanent employment contract as the head of family operations and estate management for my household, with a salary tripling what she had earned under Vanessa.

And beneath those papers was a cashier’s check for fifty thousand dollars—restitution from the frozen assets recovered from Vanessa’s illegal wire transfers, designated specifically as a bravery and hazard bonus for saving my mother’s life.

Tears instantly welled up in Elena’s eyes, spilling over her lashes as she looked up at me in absolute disbelief.

— Mr. Daniel... I... I can't accept this, she choked out, shaking her head. This is too much... I was just doing what any human being would do—

— You did what family should have done, Elena, I said, reaching across the table to gently place my hand over hers. You stood between an innocent, defenseless woman and a monster, and you risked your own safety to protect her. In twenty-five years of military service, I’ve seen men freeze in combat zones when courage mattered most. You didn't freeze.

Elena wiped a tear from her cheek with the back of her hand, offering a watery, beautiful smile that made the heavy shadow hanging over the last few months finally lift away.

— Thank you, Daniel, she whispered, using my first name for the very first time.

— Thank you, Elena, I replied, squeezing her hand softly. For giving me my mother back.
