Chapter 10

My father, William Hale, died ten months after Rachel’s accident.
I had mourned him as a man weakened by illness.
The dashcam showed him walking without assistance.
He had lied about being bedridden.
Lucas stared at the footage during questioning.
“I didn’t know Dad was coming.”
“What did he do?” Ruiz asked.
“He told Vanessa to take Rachel somewhere private.”
“Why?”
“He said the company could not survive a murder investigation.”
“Rachel was alive.”
“He said that made it easier.”
My father had built the vault amendment protecting the children.
Then he helped hide their mother.
The contradiction made no sense until Naomi examined the dates.
The amendment had been recorded after the crash.
Dad created it when he began regretting what happened.
He did not rescue Rachel.
He protected the children’s money in secret.
He chose paperwork over confession.
Again.
A letter inside the vault explained part of it.
Daniel,
I believed Vanessa and Lucas intended only to frighten Rachel and recover company records.
When I reached the bridge, I understood what they had done.
I should have called police.
Instead, I helped move her because Margaret said Lucas would die in prison.
I told myself I would free Rachel after securing the company.
Every day I waited made the next day harder.
I am a coward.
The letter ended there.
He never gave it to me.
He never saved Rachel.
His guilt produced a financial safeguard, not freedom.
Rachel listened while I read it aloud.
“He knew where I was?”
“For at least part of the time.”
“He visited once.”
I looked at her.
“What happened?”
Dad entered Clearwater House six months after the crash.
Rachel begged him to take her home.
He said he needed another week to arrange legal protection.
Then he left.
She never saw him again.
I remembered Dad becoming quieter during his final months.
I thought illness changed him.
It was shame.
That did not make Rachel’s missing years smaller.
Grant Mercer contacted Naomi from an unknown location.
He offered the original medical records in exchange for immunity.
Prosecutors refused.
He sent a sample.
It proved Vanessa ordered increased sedatives whenever Rachel remembered the children.
The file also contained evidence of other patients held under false identities.
Grant had used the same clinics in guardianship cases for wealthy families.
Rachel was one victim inside a larger system.
Detective Ruiz traced his call to a medical transport depot owned by our company.
Police arrived.
The building was empty.
Inside one ambulance, they found a live camera feed.
Noah sat inside a room.
My son had been taken from school.
The school secretary released him to a man carrying an emergency court order.
Grant had forged it.
I felt the floor disappear beneath me.
A speaker activated.
May you like
Grant’s voice filled the depot.
“Bring the vault documents, or Noah becomes another patient nobody can find.”
