Chapter 12

Dr. Adrian Mercer disappeared before police reached his clinic.

His staff claimed he had flown to Europe.

Airport records showed no departure.

His private accounts contained payments from my mother, Vanessa and several wealthy families.

The investigation identified seven people placed under false guardianships.

Some had been hidden in clinics.

Others had lost control of companies and estates.

Adrian diagnosed them as unstable after relatives paid him.

Grant began cooperating.

He wanted a reduced sentence.

He claimed Adrian had controlled the network.

Vanessa claimed Grant controlled it.

Lucas blamed Vanessa.

Mom blamed Dad.

Everyone wanted to be the smallest person in the room.

Rachel attended one meeting with prosecutors.

She listened to each explanation.

Then she said, “Nobody had to continue the next day.”

The sentence ended the argument.

Adrian’s location came from Anna.

She was drawing at the hospital when she asked Rachel, “Did the doctor with the silver glasses hurt you too?”

Rachel’s hand stopped.

“What doctor?”

“The one Vanessa brought to the bad room.”

Anna described Adrian.

He visited the house at night.

He made her answer questions.

“Do you hear your dead mother?”

“Does Noah tell you to lie?”

“Does Daddy frighten you?”

Whenever Anna answered correctly, Vanessa gave her food.

Whenever she refused, they locked her downstairs.

Adrian had been preparing a psychiatric diagnosis.

He also brought a black suitcase.

Anna remembered a sticker shaped like a lighthouse.

Ruiz searched properties connected to the Mercer family.

Adrian owned a coastal house near Port Lavaca called Lighthouse Point.

Federal agents surrounded it.

He had converted the basement into a private treatment room.

No patients were present.

The walls contained photographs of Rachel, Anna and other targets.

A whiteboard listed upcoming court dates.

Beside Anna’s name, Adrian had written:

DISSOCIATIVE DISORDER—MATERNAL FIXATION—FATHER REINFORCES DELUSION.

They planned to call a child’s memory of real abuse a delusion.

On another wall was a list of emergency exits and false identities.

Adrian had left recently.

A fishing boat was missing.

Coast Guard units searched the bay.

At midnight, the boat sent a distress signal.

Officers found it drifting.

Adrian was gone.

A waterproof case remained onboard.

Inside was a photograph of my mother entering the Mercer clinic after her supposed arrest.

The timestamp was two days later.

Mom had been released briefly to attend a medical evaluation.

She met Adrian privately.

A message was written on the back.

MARGARET KNOWS THE LAST PLACE.

I visited Mom in jail.

She looked older.

For the first time, she did not ask about the company.

“Where is Adrian?”

“I don’t know.”

“You met him.”

“He wanted money.”

“For what?”

“To disappear.”

“Did you pay him?”

“No.”

“What is the last place?”

Mom stared at the table.

“Your father built a private recovery house in New Mexico.”

“Why?”

“He said executives needed somewhere confidential.”

“What was it really?”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“A place for people who knew too much.”

Dad had created the first hidden facility.

The Mercer brothers later expanded the model.

“Did you send Rachel there?”

“No.”

“Did you send anyone?”

Mom whispered, “Rebecca Lane.”

The college girlfriend who accused Lucas of assault years earlier.

My parents called her unstable.

They told everyone she left Texas.

She had been hidden in my father’s New Mexico house.

For twenty years.
