Part 16

With the unexpected restitution funds, the first thing Delilah did was hand Helen a check to clear the house mortgage.

Helen had initially refused, arguing that the money should be saved for Noah’s college education.

But Delilah was stubborn; she insisted that the peace of mind of owning their home completely was the greatest gift they could give Noah.

With the remaining savings, Delilah decided it was time for Helen to rediscover a part of herself that had been buried.

Before the dark years, Helen had been an avid painter, her basement filled with unfinished canvases and old brushes.

One Saturday morning, while Noah was at a friend's house, Delilah surprised Helen with a brand-new wooden easel and professional paints.

"What is all this?" Helen asked, touching the smooth wood of the easel with trembling fingers.

"This is your return, Mom," Delilah said softly. "You spent the last two years saving my life and raising my son."

"Now it's time for you to remember the things that make your own soul happy."

Helen looked at the bright tubes of oil paint, the blank canvases waiting for color, and felt a sudden rush of emotion.

She set up her new studio near the large bay window in the living room, where the afternoon light was always perfect.

Her first painting was simple: a view of the backyard maple tree, its leaves catching the golden autumn light.

As the days passed, the house began to fill with the faint, comforting scent of linseed oil and turpentine.

It was the scent of creation, a beautiful contrast to the stale air of fear that used to define their lives.

Noah would often sit on a small stool next to his grandmother, watching her create worlds with a single stroke of a brush.

"Grandma, can you paint my rabbit?" he asked one afternoon, holding up his beloved stuffed animal.

"I will paint him like a king," Helen laughed, kissing the top of his head.

Watching her mother paint, Delilah realized that healing wasn't just about moving forward from the trauma.

It was about going back to reclaim the beautiful pieces of yourself that you thought were lost forever in the dark.
