Part 6

The next morning, the air inside Clara Vance’s downtown office was thick with determination.

Clara sat behind her massive mahogany desk, reviewing the documents Helen had discovered on the dining room floor.

She used a yellow highlighter to mark specific sections of the bank statements, her face grim.

Delilah sat opposite her, holding a hot cup of tea, looking more composed after a full night of sleep in a real bed.

Helen stood near the window, watching the morning traffic below.

"This is even better than I hoped," Clara said, capping her highlighter with a sharp click.

"Evan didn't just hide assets, Delilah. He committed overt fraud."

Delilah looked up from her tea. "Fraud?"

Clara nodded, sliding a document across the desk.

"Look at this signature on the condominium loan application from two years ago."

"It lists you as a co-signer, using your credit history to secure the secondary property."

"Is that your signature?"

Delilah leaned forward, studying the cursive writing at the bottom of the page.

Her eyes widened.

"No. It looks like my handwriting, but I never signed this. I didn't even know this property existed."

"He forged it," Helen said from the window, her voice dropping into a dangerous calm.

"He forged his wife's signature to buy a luxury apartment while forcing her to beg for grocery money."

"Exactly," Clara said. "And because he used the mail to send these fraudulent documents to the bank, it’s not just a civil matter anymore."

"It crosses into criminal territory."

Suddenly, Delilah’s phone buzzed loudly on the desk.

The screen lit up with Evan’s name.

Delilah froze, her entire body going rigid.

The instinct to panic, honed over three years of torment, tried to take over.

Clara reached out and placed a calm hand over the phone.

"Do not answer it," Clara instructed smoothly. "Let it go to voicemail."

The phone buzzed four more times before falling silent.

A moment later, a text message notification chimed.

Delilah looked at the screen.

Evan: You think you're clever because your mother has a house? I’m filing for full custody today. I’ve already told the court you abandoned the marital home and took my son without permission. You have until 5 PM to bring Noah back, or I’m calling the police.

Delilah’s breathing grew shallow. "Mom... he’s going to call the police on me."

Helen walked over and stood directly behind her daughter's chair, placing her hands firmly on Delilah’s shoulders.

"Let him call them," Helen said, her voice steady and unyielding.

"Let him explain to the police why his name isn't on the deed of the house he was living in."

"Let him explain why his wife was sleeping in a car while he had eighty thousand dollars in a secret account."

Clara smiled, a predatory, brilliant smile that belonged to a lawyer who knew she had already won.

"Mr. Mercer is playing checkers, Delilah. We are playing chess."

"I am going to file a counter-petition within the hour."

"We will request emergency temporary custody, exclusive use of the Willow Lane property, and a freeze on all marital assets due to suspected financial fraud."

"By the time the sun sets today, your husband is going to realize that the cage he built for you has just locked him out."
