Chapter 4 — A New Beginning

Three weeks later...

Anna went into labor.

The delivery room felt nothing like the house we had left behind.

There were no raised voices.

No criticism.

Only encouragement.

After hours of labor, our daughter entered the world.

The nurse gently placed her into Anna's arms.

Our little girl immediately stopped crying.

Anna smiled through exhausted tears.

"She's beautiful."

I kissed both of their foreheads.

"We'll protect her."

"Always."

Later that afternoon, the nurse quietly handed me an envelope.

Inside was a letter.

From my mother.

I folded it closed without reading it.
