CHAPTER 4 – THE WITNESS NOBODY EXPECTED

CHAPTER 4 – THE WITNESS NOBODY EXPECTED
Mark sat in the interrogation room just after midnight.
His expensive suit was wrinkled.
His confidence had disappeared.
Across the table sat two detectives.
Neither had spoken for nearly five minutes.
Silence.
The oldest interrogation tactic.
Eventually Mark cracked.
"My wife exaggerates."
One detective slid a photograph across the table.
Emily's bruised face.
"Explain this."
"She bruises easily."
Another photograph.
Broken ribs from last year.
"That too?"
"She fell."
Then another.
Security footage stills.
Emily being shoved.
Mark said nothing.
The detective placed one final item on the table.
The brown envelope.
"We know about the fabricated records."
Mark looked confused.
"My mother handled that."
"So you're admitting you knew?"
Mark froze.
Too late.
Meanwhile...
Emily sat in a quiet room at the police station.
A victim advocate handed her a cup of tea.
"You've been very brave."
Emily shook her head.
"I was brave tonight."
"I wasn't brave before."
The advocate smiled gently.
"Sometimes surviving is the bravest thing."
Emily looked toward the hallway.
She suddenly noticed a familiar face.
Jacob Turner.
Mark's former accountant.
He looked nervous.
Very nervous.
Robert immediately recognized him.
"I remember you."
Jacob nodded.
"I quit six months ago."
"Why?"
Jacob glanced around before answering.
"Because I couldn't keep hiding things."
Robert's instincts sharpened.
"What things?"
Jacob opened a worn leather briefcase.
"I didn't come tonight because of the assault."
"I came because..."
"...I saw your car outside."
He removed several flash drives.
Tax records.
Hidden bank accounts.
Wire transfers.
Then...
A black notebook.
Emily frowned.
"I've seen that."
Jacob nodded.
"Mark called it his insurance book."
Robert opened it carefully.
Every page contained names.
Judges.
Police officers.
Business executives.
Politicians.
Beside each name...
A number.
And handwritten notes.
"Gift."
"Vacation."
"Campaign donation."
"Favor owed."
Robert's expression darkened.
"This isn't just domestic violence."
Jacob swallowed.
"No."
"It never was."
Emily stared at the notebook.
"What is it?"
Jacob answered quietly.
"It's the map."
"The map of everyone who helped Mark stay untouchable."
Robert slowly closed the notebook.
His voice became colder than Emily had ever heard.
"Then tomorrow..."
"...a lot more people are going to wake up terrified."
Outside the interview room...
None of them noticed the figure standing in the shadows at the end of the hallway.
A man in a tailored black coat watched silently before turning away.
He took out his phone.
Only six words left his lips.
"Tell them the notebook was found."
Then he disappeared into the night.
May you like
Someone else knew the truth.
And they were already making their next move.
