CHAPTER 7 – THE TRAP INSIDE THE COURTHOUSE

CHAPTER 7 – THE TRAP INSIDE THE COURTHOUSE

Jacob Turner's final message changed everything.

DON'T TRUST THE FBI. ONE OF THEM WORKS FOR HIM.

The conference room fell silent.

Special Agent Lisa Monroe and Special Agent Daniel Cruz looked at each other.

Neither spoke.

Robert slowly folded his phone and slipped it into his pocket.

His face revealed nothing.

After thirty-three years in federal court, he had learned one rule above all others:

Never let the guilty know what you know.

Instead, he smiled politely.

"We'll continue as planned."

Monroe nodded.

"Good."

But Robert was no longer watching her.

He was watching Daniel Cruz.

The younger agent had blinked.

Just once.

It was enough.

Three days later, Mark Sullivan appeared in court for his preliminary hearing.

Every television station in the state covered the case.

Emily walked into the courthouse beside her father.

For the first time in years, there was no makeup covering her bruises.

She wanted the world to see them.

Not because she was ashamed.

Because she was finished hiding.

Mark entered wearing an expensive gray suit.

He smiled when he saw Emily.

"You still came."

She looked directly into his eyes.

"I came to watch your lies end."

He leaned closer.

"You think you've won?"

Emily answered quietly.

"I already have."

Inside Courtroom Four, the hearing began.

Robert wasn't acting as prosecutor.

He was simply seated behind Emily.

Watching.

Listening.

Waiting.

Mark's attorney argued that the assault had been exaggerated.

That emotions had run high.

That Emily was unstable.

Exactly the story Diane had spent years preparing.

Then the courtroom doors opened.

Lieutenant Collins entered carrying a sealed evidence case.

"The prosecution requests permission to introduce newly recovered digital evidence."

Victor Langston frowned.

"What evidence?"

The judge nodded.

"Proceed."

The courtroom lights dimmed.

A projector illuminated the screen.

Video after video appeared.

Security footage.

Audio recordings.

Hidden phone backups.

Cloud archives.

Mark striking Emily.

Threatening her.

Destroying furniture.

Apologizing.

Then repeating the cycle.

Every incident carried a timestamp.

Every lie collapsed.

Mark slowly turned toward the gallery.

His mother looked down.

Unable to meet his eyes.

Then came the final recording.

The hidden office camera.

The one Mark never knew existed.

It showed him placing the black lockbox behind the false wall.

Then speaking into his phone.

"I've secured Project Birthright."

Every person in the courtroom stopped breathing.

Mark whispered,

"No..."

Victor closed his legal folder.

"I withdraw."

Mark stared.

"What?"

"I will not represent a client involved in human trafficking."

He stood.

Collected his briefcase.

Walked away.

Leaving Mark completely alone.

Outside the courthouse...

Robert quietly approached Agent Daniel Cruz.

"I've always wondered something."

Cruz smiled.

"What's that?"

Robert handed him a cup of coffee.

"Whether guilty people drink with their right hand."

Cruz accepted it.

His right hand shook slightly.

Robert smiled.

"Thank you."

"For what?"

"For confirming my suspicion."

Before Cruz could react, four federal officers surrounded him.

Monroe herself stepped forward.

"You are under arrest for obstruction of justice, conspiracy, destruction of evidence, and accepting illegal payments."

Cruz froze.

"You set me up."

Robert nodded.

"No."

"You walked into your own trap."

Monroe explained.

"Jacob's message never identified anyone."

"We watched who became nervous."

May you like

Cruz lowered his head.

He had betrayed the investigation from the beginning.
