Chapter 1

My Eight-Year-Old Son Came Home From School and Found His Father Choking Me on the Living Room Floor—Then He Called the One Man My Husband Feared

Ryan had me pinned against the carpet when the front door opened.

His hand was around my throat.

“Stop fighting me,” he hissed.

I could barely breathe.

Then I heard my eight-year-old son scream.

“Dad! Get off Mom!”

Noah dropped his backpack and ran straight toward us.

He grabbed Ryan’s arm with both hands.

“Let her go!”

Ryan shoved him away without even looking.

“Noah, go upstairs!”

My son stumbled into the coffee table.

I tried to scream his name, but nothing came out.

Noah stared at me for one terrified second.

Then he ran.

Ryan thought he had gone upstairs.

He hadn’t.

Noah grabbed my phone from the kitchen counter and called the first person he knew would come.

“Grandpa, Dad is hurting Mom.”

Less than fifteen minutes later, someone began pounding on the front door.

Ryan finally released me.

“What did you do?” he shouted.

The door suddenly swung open.

My father, Michael, rushed inside.

He saw me on the floor holding my neck.

Then he saw Ryan.

My father crossed the room, dragged my husband away from me, and hit him hard enough to send him stumbling backward.

Ryan stared at him in shock.

“You can’t come into my house and—”

My father grabbed him by the shirt.

“This isn’t your house.”

Ryan went completely still.

My father pointed toward the front door.

“Get out of my house.”

I stared at him.

May you like

Ryan stared at him too.

Then my father reached into his jacket, pulled out a folder, and said, “Emily, there’s something about this house your husband never told you.”
