Part 28

Three days later, the corporate world had officially settled into its permanent new configuration.

The headlines of the Financial Times and The Wall Street Journal carried the same front-page story:

THE FALL OF STERLING: VALE INTERNATIONAL ABSORBS DEFENSE TITAN IN HISTORIC HOSTILE TAKEOVER.

Alistair Sterling's company had been completely liquidated to pay off his catastrophic debts from the copper market manipulation.

Vale International bought their assets for pennies on the dollar, effectively doubling our global market share overnight.

As for Alistair himself, his health had completely failed under the stress of his financial ruin. He was currently under permanent police guard in a private medical facility, awaiting trial for corporate espionage and kidnapping.

I sat in my office, the New York skyline bathed in the warm light of a late winter afternoon.

The twins were playing on a soft plush rug in the corner of the room, their laughter filling the space that used to be so cold and sterile.

Marcus walked in, carrying a single, legal-sized folder.

"The final asset transfer from the Sterling liquidation is complete," he said, placing the document on my desk.

"You now control eighty-five percent of the private satellite networks in the northern hemisphere."

"Thomas's sentencing hearing has also been set. The prosecutor is pushing for life without parole, given the kidnapping charges."

I nodded, not even looking at the papers. "Let the lawyers handle the details, Marcus. My focus is on the future now."

He smiled, a genuine, relaxed look that I rarely saw on his face. "You've done it, Victoria. You didn't just survive. You conquered them all."

"We did it," I corrected him, looking out at the city.

"But an empire isn't just about destroying enemies, Marcus. It's about building something that lasts."

"I want to set up a global foundation in my father's name—focused on funding clean technology and protecting children in conflict zones."

"Let's use the wealth we took from those monsters to fix the world they tried to break."

"Consider it done," Marcus said, bowing his head before exiting the room to execute the orders.

I stood up from my desk and walked over to the rug, sitting down cross-legged next to Lily and Arthur.

Lily handed me a small wooden block, her bright blue eyes wide with pure, untainted joy.

I took it, smiling down at her, feeling a deep, profound peace settle over my soul.

The woman who had been thrown out into the snow was gone.

In her place stood a mother, a ruler, and a protector.

The winter was finally over.

And my reign had just begun.
