Chapter 6 - The Federal Showdown

The Dirksen Federal Courthouse in downtown Chicago was a fortress of granite and glass. At 9:00 AM the following Monday, the private elevator to the eighth-floor ceremonial courtroom opened, and Roman Calloway stepped out, his presence immediately drawing the attention of the federal marshals stationed along the corridor.
Beside him walked Elena, looking elegant and entirely transformed in a tailored emerald-green dress Roman had ordered for her, her hair pinned up in a sophisticated twist. She held Leo tightly against her chest in a sleek black infant carrier. On her left side stood Marcus Thorne, his briefcase in hand, looking like a executioner in a three-piece suit.
Thomas Vance and his entourage of six high-priced corporate defense lawyers were already waiting at the defense table. When Thomas saw Elena walking in under Roman’s protection, his face went a dangerous shade of crimson. He stood up, but his lead attorney, an older man named Sterling, grabbed his arm and pulled him back down.
"This is an outrage, Your Honor!" Sterling shouted as soon as Federal Judge Evelyn Ross took the bench. "The plaintiff is using a civil rights framework to bypass a valid state-level custody order regarding a child at extreme medical risk!"
Judge Ross, a sharp-eyed woman in her late fifties known for her intolerance of corporate bullying, banged her gavel once. The sound cracked through the high-ceilinged room like a gunshot.
"Mr. Sterling, if you shout in my courtroom again, you’ll be spending the afternoon in a holding cell," Judge Ross said, her voice dropping into a dangerous, quiet chill. She looked over her glasses at Marcus Thorne. "Mr. Thorne, you filed an emergency petition alleging systemic coercion and judicial corruption at the state level. You have fifteen minutes to convince me not to dismiss this case out of hand."
Marcus stood up, buttoning his jacket as he stepped to the podium. He didn't look at his notes; he looked directly at the judge.
"Your Honor, four days ago, Elena Vance was found sleeping on a concrete floor in a stairwell, suffering from a severe postpartum infection," Marcus began, his voice resonant and commanding. "She was there not because she was an unfit mother, but because the defendant, Thomas Vance, systematically used his vast wealth and political influence to erase her existence from the city of Chicago."
Marcus slammed a thick stack of financial documents onto the evidence table. "We have submitted forensic accounting showing that Miss Vance’s personal and business accounts were frozen without a valid judgment, utilizing a forged signature on a corporate debt waiver. We have submitted signed affidavits from three separate non-profit shelter directors stating they were explicitly told by Vance International representatives that their municipal funding would be pulled if they provided a bed to Elena Vance."
A murmur went through the gallery. Thomas Vance shifted uncomfortably, his fingers digging into the leather armrests of his chair.
"And finally, Your Honor," Marcus said, turning his gaze directly to Thomas, "we have the phone records and financial tracking showing a private payment of fifty thousand dollars made from a Vance International subsidiary to an offshore account associated with State Judge Miller’s son exactly six hours before the temporary guardianship order was signed."
"That is a lie!" Thomas roared, standing up, his chair screeching against the floor. "She’s unstable! She’s trying to steal my company with a bastard child!"
"Mr. Vance!" Judge Ross thundered, slamming her gavel repeatedly. "Sit down immediately!"
Roman Calloway slowly stood up from the front row of the gallery. He didn't say a word, but his massive frame and the absolute, lethal focus of his gaze locked onto Thomas Vance across the room. The air in the courtroom instantly changed; the private security operatives Thomas had brought shifted back, their hands moving away from their jackets as they realized that if a fight started in this room, they wouldn't leave it alive.
Judge Ross looked at Roman, then down at the evidence on her desk. She spent five minutes reading the affidavits, her expression hardening into a mask of pure judicial fury.
"I have seen a lot of corporate greed in my tenure on this bench, Mr. Vance," Judge Ross said, her voice shaking with an angry authority. "But the intentional, malicious endangerment of a newborn child and a vulnerable mother to secure a corporate voting majority is among the most despicable acts I have ever witnessed."
She picked up her pen, signing a document with a sharp, heavy stroke.
"I am issuing an immediate federal injunction invalidating the state-level guardianship order," Judge Ross decreed. "I am ordering the immediate unfreezing of all assets belonging to Elena Vance. Furthermore, I am referring the financial records regarding Judge Miller to the Department of Justice for an immediate federal bribery investigation. Miss Vance, you are free to register your son with the estate executors today. This court recognizes your full, uninterrupted custody."
The gavel fell with a final, decisive thud.
Elena let out a sob, her head dropping against Roman’s shoulder as he stepped forward to support her. Across the room, two federal marshals stepped up behind Thomas Vance, their hands resting on their utility belts.

"Thomas Vance," one marshal said, his voice flat. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit wire fraud and federal bribery. Step away from the table."
As Thomas was led out in handcuffs, his furious screams echoing down the marble corridor, Roman wrapped his arm around Elena’s shoulders, his touch steady, protective, and for the first time, openly tender.
