Chapter 7 - The Vesting of the Empire

Three days after the court victory, the board room of Vance International was dead silent.

The room was situated on the fiftieth floor of a glass skyscraper overlooking Millennium Park, a space usually filled with the loud, arrogant voices of old-money executives. Today, however, the twelve board members sat in stiff, terrified compliance, staring at the empty seat at the head of the table that had belonged to Thomas Vance.

The double doors opened, and Elena walked in.

She wore a flawless charcoal suit, her amber eyes bright, her posture commanding. She didn't carry Leo today; he was safe at the Lake Forest estate with Dr. Vance and a private nurse under Davis’s heavy protection. Beside her walked Roman Calloway, his presence in the Vance boardroom an implicit, terrifying message to everyone in the room: The old regime is dead. I run this city now.

Elena took her place at the head of the table. Marcus Thorne stood behind her, opening a leather portfolio and sliding a certified document to the corporate secretary.

"As of nine o’clock this morning," Marcus announced, his voice smooth and cold, "the trust of Arthur Vance has officially vested. Elena Vance and her son, Leo Vance-Calloway, hold thirty-five percent of the voting shares of this corporation. Combined with the twenty-five percent market share purchased by Calloway Holdings over the last seventy-two hours, Miss Vance now controls a sixty percent voting majority of Vance International."

The board members looked at each other, several of them turning pale as they realized their entire careers were now in the hands of the girl they had helped Thomas try to destroy.

"I have a few changes to make," Elena said, her voice steady, carrying a quiet, regal authority that made Roman smile from his seat beside her. "Effective immediately, the current board is dissolved. A new board will be appointed by the end of the week. Furthermore, all pending eviction notices on the West Side gentrification projects are permanently rescinded. Vance International is transitioning from real estate speculation to affordable housing development."

"Miss Vance," one older board member stammered, his hands shaking. "That... that will reduce our profit margins by forty percent next quarter!"

Roman leaned forward, his elbows resting on the polished mahogany table, his dark eyes locking onto the speaker. "The profit margins will be exactly what Miss Vance says they are, counselor. And if anyone at this table has an issue with the new direction of this company, my acquisition team is more than happy to buy out your remaining shares at a fifty percent discount from market value. Do we have any objections?"

The silence that followed was absolute. No one dared to breathe, let alone object to the man who could crush their entire portfolio by noon.

"Good," Elena said, standing up. "This meeting is adjourned. Have your resignation letters on my desk by five o’clock."

As they walked out into the executive elevator lobby, the heavy glass doors closing behind them, Elena let out a breath she had been holding for months. She turned to Roman, her face breaking into a wide, brilliant smile that seemed to light up the sterile corporate space.

"We did it," she whispered. "Leo is safe. My father’s legacy is safe."

Roman reached out, his large hands gently framing her face, his thumbs wiping away a stray hair from her forehead. "You did it, Elena. You survived the stairwell. You fought the empire. I just provided the perimeter."

"You provided everything, Roman," she said softly, leaning into his touch, her amber eyes melting into his dark, obsidian ones. "You gave me my life back."
