Chapter 3

CHAPTER 3 — Tears in the Dust

The flashing lights painted the shelter walls in chaotic colors,

but I only focused on Emily.

She felt so incredibly fragile in my arms,

like a bird with a broken wing.

I slowly pulled back,

looking down at the two tiny faces resting against her.

They were sleeping,

somehow completely undisturbed by the noise.

"They are beautiful," I whispered,

my voice choked with heavy emotion.

Emily looked up at me,

her eyes filled with a mixture of pain and relief.

"They are a boy and a girl," she said,

her voice barely above a whisper.

"Leo and Maya."

"Leo and Maya," I repeated,

testing the names on my tongue,

feeling a piece of my broken heart heal.

An officer walked over to us,

holding a small notepad.

"Mr. Carter," he said respectfully,

"we have Ms. Bennett in custody,

and the lawyers are cooperating fully."

"Thank you," I replied,

never taking my eyes off my children.

Once the police cleared the parking lot,

the heavy silence returned to the rural shelter.

"Emily," I began,

swallowing the lump in my throat,

"I don't expect you to forgive me."

She looked away,

staring at the dusty ground beneath our feet.

"You didn't just throw me out,

Michael," she said,

her tears falling freely now.

"You looked at me with absolute disgust,

you called me a thief,

and you didn't even listen when I begged."

Every word felt like a knife twisting in my gut.

"I know," I cried,

falling to my knees in the dirt.

"I was blind,

I was stupid,

and I was manipulated by a monster."

I looked up at her,

my hands resting on my knees.

"But when I saw you on that road today,

with my babies,

I knew my life was entirely wrong."

Emily slowly sat down on the wooden bench,

shifting the babies so she could breathe.

"I slept in my car for three months," she told me,

her voice trembling with remembered trauma.

"Until the engine died,

and I had to walk to this shelter."

I covered my face with my hands,

sobbing uncontrollably.

"I am so sorry," I repeated,

over and over again,

wishing I could turn back time.

"I tried to call you when they were born," she said,

gently touching Leo's soft cheek.

"A nurse let me use her phone,

but a woman answered."

"Ashley," I realized,

feeling sick to my stomach.

"She told me you were on your honeymoon,

and that you never wanted to see me again," Emily finished,

wiping a tear from her own face.

I reached out slowly,

my hand hovering in the air between us.

"Please,

let me take you away from here," I begged.

"Let me give you a safe place to sleep,

food for the babies,

and a doctor to check on all of you."

Emily hesitated,

her protective instincts battling her pure exhaustion.

"Just for tonight," I promised,

"I will sleep in the hallway,

I just want you safe."

She looked at Leo,

then at Maya,

and finally gave a small,

exhausted nod.

May you like

"Okay," she whispered,

"just for tonight."
