Chapter 4

CHAPTER 4 — The War in the Courtroom

The next morning,

I woke up on the hard floor outside the guest bedroom.

I listened closely,

hearing the soft sounds of babies cooing inside.

I stood up,

my back aching,

but my heart feeling lighter than it had in a year.

I walked downstairs,

finding David sitting at my kitchen island.

"Good morning," David said,

sliding a thick folder across the marble counter.

"How are they?" I asked,

pouring two cups of dark coffee.

"They are safe," David replied,

"but Ashley is trying to post bail."

I gripped my coffee mug tightly,

my knuckles turning completely white.

"She cannot get out," I growled,

"she is dangerous."

David nodded,

opening the folder to reveal several photographs.

"Her lawyers abandoned her last night," he explained,

"once they realized she had forged the judge's signature."

I looked at the photos,

seeing bank statements highlighting massive transfers.

"She didn't just steal from you,

Michael," David continued,

"she stole from your company's pension fund."

I closed my eyes,

taking a deep,

shaky breath.

"We need the best legal team in the state," I ordered.

"I want her completely ruined,

I want her to feel the exact helplessness she forced on Emily."

Later that week,

the courtroom was packed with reporters and curious spectators.

Ashley sat at the defense table,

wearing a bright orange jumpsuit,

her blonde hair messy and unwashed.

She looked small,

pathetic,

and entirely stripped of her false power.

I sat on the opposite side,

holding Emily's hand under the wooden table.

Emily had refused to come at first,

but she wanted to look her abuser in the eye.

The judge slammed his wooden gavel,

demanding silence in the chaotic room.

"Ms. Bennett," the judge boomed,

"the evidence against you is absolutely overwhelming."

Ashley started to cry,

but it was entirely fake,

a desperate performance for mercy.

"I was confused,

Your Honor," she sobbed,

"I did it for love."

The judge narrowed his eyes,

clearly disgusted by her theatrical display.

"You forged federal documents,

you stole millions of dollars,

and you attempted to kidnap two infants," he stated firmly.

"There is no love in your actions,

only pure,

unadulterated greed."

The prosecutor stood up,

presenting the final piece of evidence.

It was the audio recording from the shelter,

captured by the police dashcam.

Ashley's cruel voice filled the quiet courtroom,

threatening to throw the children into foster care.

Emily squeezed my hand,

her body trembling at the sound of that voice.

I squeezed back,

silently promising her that it was finally over.

"The court finds you guilty on all charges," the judge announced,

his voice echoing with finality.

"You are sentenced to twenty-five years in federal prison,

without the possibility of early parole."

Ashley screamed,

a horrific,

piercing sound,

as the bailiffs grabbed her arms and dragged her away.

She looked at me one last time,

her eyes filled with pure hatred,

but I didn't care.

I turned to Emily,

seeing the heavy burden finally lift from her shoulders.

May you like

The monster was gone,

and the war was finally won.
