Chapter 5 - The Web of Ascension

The reunion in the cold, stone basement was short-lived.
Lena wept against Adrian’s chest, her thin fingers clutching his tactical vest with a desperate, crushing strength as if she believed he would vanish if she let go. Adrian held her, burying his face in her hair, feeling the delicate rise and fall of her ribs. After four years of living with a ghost, holding her real, warm body felt like a resurrection.
“Milo...” Lena sobbed, her voice raw and breathless. “Adrian... they took Milo... they took our babies...”
Adrian pulled back slightly, holding her face between his large hands. “I have him, Lena. I have the baby. He’s safe at the house. A little girl named Nora saved him.”
Lena’s eyes widened with sudden, brilliant clarity. “Nora? Nora got him out?”
“Yes,” Adrian said. “He’s safe. He’s warm. But Lena... you said babies. What do you mean?”
Before Lena could answer, a loud alarm began to wail throughout the subterranean corridor—a shrill, rhythmic siren accompanied by flashing red emergency lights.
“Adrian!” Marcus shouted from the hallway, his weapon raised toward the far end of the corridor. “We’ve got company! High-speed perimeter breach outside! Reinforcements are coming from the main road!”
Adrian stood up, keeping one arm securely wrapped around Lena. “Can you walk?”
“I... I think so,” Lena said, her legs trembling as she tried to swing them over the side of the mattress. She was wearing a simple gray hospital gown, her feet bare against the cold concrete floor.
Adrian didn't wait. He bent down, lifted her effortlessly into his arms, and carried her out of the cell.
The corridor was now filled with smoke and the chatter of gunfire from the upper level. Marcus and two tactical operators formed a protective shield around Adrian as they navigated back toward the breach entry.
“They aren't trying to recapture the facility!” Marcus called out over the noise of gunfire. “They’re trying to destroy it! Thermite charges have been initiated on the upper floor!”
“Get us out!” Adrian yelled.
They burst out of the side door into the freezing drizzle just as a massive fireball erupted from the second-story windows of the house, illuminating the dark pine forest in brilliant shades of orange and yellow. The force of the explosion shook the ground, sending wood splinters and glass raining down upon the wet earth.
The tactical team threw open the doors of the armored SUV. Adrian placed Lena inside, climbing in right beside her, while Marcus slammed the heavy door shut and ordered the driver to accelerate.
As the convoy sped away from the burning house into the dark forest, Lena collapsed against Adrian’s side, her body trembling violently from shock and cold. Adrian wrapped a heavy wool blanket around her, pulling her close.
“Drink this,” he said, handing her a flask of warm water from the vehicle’s medical kit.
Lena drank greedily, then leaned her head back against the leather seat, staring at the ceiling of the vehicle as if trying to adjust to the reality of motion, speed, and freedom.
“They told me you were dead, Adrian,” Lena whispered, tears slipping down her sunken cheeks. “Four years ago... after the car crash. They staged the crash. Dr. Vance... he drugged my coffee at the cafe near the coast. When I woke up, I was in that basement.”
“Why?” Adrian asked, his voice shaking with a terrible, consuming fury. “Why did they do this to us, Lena? What did Ascension want with you?”
Lena looked at him, her dark eyes filled with a terrifying depth of knowledge.
“They didn't just want me, Adrian,” she revealed, her voice dropping into a frightened hush. “They wanted the Vale genomic sequence. Five years ago, when our first son was born at St. Jude’s... Vance discovered that our combined genetic lineage carried an exceptionally rare autoimmune resistance marker—a sequence that could be used to synthesize universal cellular therapies worth tens of billions of dollars.”
Adrian’s breath hitched. Vale Biotech had spent a decade researching cellular regeneration, but he had never imagined his own family’s DNA held the key.
“They faked our son’s death in 2021 to harvest his bone marrow and stem cells,” Lena continued, her chest heaving as the horror spilled out. “They kept him in a private facility in Switzerland. And then... when they realized they needed fresh, living embryonic cultures to keep synthesizing the treatment... they came for me.”
Adrian felt the world tilt on its axis. He gripped the edge of the seat so hard the leather groaned under his knuckles.
“Our first son...” Adrian managed to say, his voice barely functioning. “He... he didn't die five years ago?”

Lena looked at him, her eyes shining with tears.
“Our first son is five years old, Adrian,” Lena said softly. “His name is Milo. And he is currently being held in a private estate in Geneva, owned by the CEO of Ascension Bio-Tech—a man named Julian Sterling.”
