Chapter 4 - The Ghost in the Machine

The old pier,

creaked and groaned,

under the assault,

of the wind,

and the waves.

Ethan parked,

his truck,

a distance away,

so as not,

to draw attention,

and walked,

into the darkness.

He moved,

with caution,

his eyes,

scanning the,

familiar silhouettes,

of the shipping,

containers,

and the rusted,

machinery.

This was where,

Arthur had,

taken him,

when he was,

a boy.

This was where,

he had learned,

the value,

of hard work,

and the smell,

of salt,

and diesel.

He remembered,

the old warehouse,

at the end,

of the pier.

It had been,

his father's,

first office,

his first,

command center.

He approached it,

the door,

hanging slightly,

off its hinges.

He pushed it open,

the sound,

of screeching metal,

piercing the,

howling wind.

Inside,

it was cold,

and damp,

smelling of,

rotting wood,

and brine.

He clicked on,

his flashlight,

the beam,

cutting through,

the thick,

dusty air.

It was empty,

save for,

the ghosts,

of the past.

Old desks,

covered in,

tarps,

piles of,

useless documents,

and a few,

broken chairs.

He walked,

to the center,

of the room,

where a large,

model ship,

sat on,

a pedestal.

It was the,

'Sea Mist'.

The same,

model ship,

mentioned in,

the will.

He approached it,

carefully,

his hands,

trembling slightly.

This was it.

The connection.

He began,

to inspect the,

model,

running his,

fingers,

along the hull,

the masts,

and the deck.

It was crafted,

with incredible,

detail,

a testament,

to Arthur's,

obsession.

There was,

a small,

compartment,

hidden beneath,

the wheelhouse.

He pressed it,

but nothing,

happened.

He tried again,

applying more,

pressure,

but it remained,

stubbornly,

shut.

He frowned,

taking a step,

back,

and looking,

at the ship,

with new eyes.

Maybe,

it wasn't,

just about,

the ship.

Maybe,

it was about,

the dock.

He shone,

his light,

on the floor,

around the,

pedestal.

He noticed,

a faint,

outline,

in the dust.

A shape,

that did not,

belong there.

He knelt,

on the floor,

rubbing the,

dust away,

with his sleeve.

It was a series,

of coordinates,

etched into,

the floorboards,

by a knife.

He pulled out,

his phone,

quickly,

typing the numbers,

into his,

map app.

The coordinates,

pointed to,

a small,

island,

a few miles,

off the coast,

that the Sterling,

company had,

bought,

years ago,

but never,

used.

He stared,

at the screen,

his heart,

pounding.

He was,

on the right,

track.

He heard,

a sound,

behind him,

a soft,

scraping noise,

like a foot,

on gravel.

He spun around,

shining his,

light into,

the dark,

corners,

of the warehouse.

Who is there?

He called out,

his voice,

steady,

but ready,

for a fight.

There was,

no answer,

only the wind,

howling through,

the gaps,

in the walls.

He moved,

toward the,

door,

his senses,

heightened,

his muscles,

tense.

He stepped,

out into,

the night,

scanning the,

area.

He saw,

nothing,

but the rain,

still pouring,

down.

He climbed,

into his truck,

locking the doors,

and driving,

away.

He felt,

like he,

was being,

watched.

He felt,

like the,

game was,

already,

more dangerous,

than he,

had anticipated.

He drove,

back to,

the shop,

his mind,

racing.

He had,

to get,

to the island.

He had,

to find,

the key.

And he had,

to do it,

before Julian,

could stop,

him.

He parked,

the truck,

and climbed,

the stairs,

to his room.

He laid,

the map,

out on,

his table.

The island,

was small,

and isolated.

It would be,

the perfect place,

to hide,

something.

He realized,

that this,

was not,

just a hunt,

for a key.

It was a,

test.

His father,

was testing,

his resourcefulness,

his courage,

and his,

determination.

And Ethan,

would not,

fail.

He would,

May you like

show them,

all.
