Chapter 7 - The Underground

The tunnel,
was narrow,
and suffocating,
the walls,
weeping with,
moisture,
and the air,
stale,
and heavy.
Ethan walked,
carefully,
his eyes,
scanning the,
floor,
for any,
signs of,
instability.
The beam,
of his,
flashlight,
danced across,
the rough,
concrete,
revealing,
cracks,
and patches,
of mold.
He heard,
the distant,
sound,
of water,
lapping,
against the,
tunnel walls,
a reminder,
of the,
ocean,
just inches,
away.
He felt,
like an,
intruder,
in a,
forgotten world,
a place,
where secrets,
were meant,
to stay,
buried.
He kept,
moving,
his focus,
sharpened,
by the,
urgency,
of his,
mission.
He knew,
he was,
on a,
clock.
He knew,
the others,
would not,
rest,
until they,
found the,
key.
He wondered,
what Julian,
was planning.
He wondered,
what Victoria,
was hiding.
He wondered,
if his,
father,
had anticipated,
all of,
this.
He reached,
a junction,
where the,
tunnel,
split,
in two.
He paused,
shining his,
light,
down both,
paths.
They both,
looked,
the same.
Dark,
forbidding,
and silent.
He checked,
his compass,
trying to,
orient himself,
toward the,
island.
He chose,
the left,
path,
feeling a,
faint,
breeze,
coming from,
that direction.
Airflow,
meant an,
exit.
He continued,
walking,
the tunnel,
growing,
even narrower.
He had,
to stoop,
low,
his back,
aching,
from the,
strain.
But he,
did not,
stop.
He pushed,
himself forward,
his mind,
fixed on,
the goal.
He suddenly,
heard a,
sound.
A rhythmic,
thumping,
coming from,
up ahead.
He froze,
extinguishing,
his light.
He crouched,
in the,
shadows,
his breath,
held.
The thumping,
grew louder,
and then,
he saw,
a light.
A beam,
of artificial,
light,
moving,
toward him.
He pressed,
himself,
against the,
wall,
his heart,
hammering.
A man,
walked past,
wearing a,
black,
tactical uniform,
and carrying,
a radio.
He was,
one of,
Julian's,
security men.
Ethan waited,
until the,
guard,
had passed,
and then,
he crept,
forward,
silently.
He realized,
that Julian,
had already,
secured the,
island.
They were,
patrolling the,
tunnels.
He had,
to be,
even more,
careful.
He continued,
moving,
his senses,
heightened.
He saw,
a ladder,
up ahead,
leading to,
a hatch,
in the,
ceiling.
He climbed,
it,
pushing against,
the metal,
cover.
It budged,
just enough,
for him,
to peek,
through.
He saw,
the interior,
of a,
large,
underground,
bunker.
It was,
filled with,
boxes,
files,
and machinery.
This was,
the Sterling,
vault.
He had,
found it.
He waited,
for the,
guard to,
move away,
and then,
he pushed,
the hatch,
open,
climbing inside.
He stood,
in the,
vault,
surrounded by,
the history,
of his,
family's,
empire.
He began,
to search,
his heart,
racing,
with anticipation.
He had,
to find,
the key.
He had,
May you like
to find,
the truth.
