Chapter 18 - THE FAMILY PORTRAIT

The reception following the garden ceremony was a joyful, relaxed celebration filled with laughter, clinking glasses, and the pitter-patter of little feet running across the emerald lawn.
Late in the afternoon, a professional photographer hired for the occasion called out across the yard.
“Alright, everyone! Time for the official family portrait!”
Leo and Maya groaned playfully, having spent the last hour chasing each other around the rose bushes.
“Come on, champions,” Luca laughed, scooping Maya up into his arms while Leo eagerly grabbed Nia’s hand.
They gathered under the large oak tree where fairy lights were beginning to twinkle as dusk approached.
“Everyone close together,” the photographer instructed, adjusting his lens. “Big smiles!”
Luca stood slightly behind Nia, wrapping his arms securely around her waist, resting his chin gently on her shoulder.
Nia leaned back against him, her hand resting over his.
Leo stood proudly beside his mother, while Maya hugged Luca’s leg, flashing a bright, gap-toothed grin.
“Ready? One, two, three...”
Click.
The shutter snapped, capturing the exact moment frozen in time.
Not a billionaire empire built on glass and steel.
Not a tabloid headline or a corporate merger.
A real family.
Later that evening, after the guests had departed and the children were finally tucked into bed, Luca and Nia sat together on the front porch swing of the brownstone.
The cool evening breeze carried the scent of blooming lilacs from the garden.
Luca pulled Nia close against his side, resting his cheek against her dark hair.
“Penny for your thoughts, Mrs. Moretti,” Luca murmured softly.
Nia smiled, looking out at the quiet, tree-lined Chicago street.
“I was just thinking about that rainy day five years ago when I walked out of the penthouse with a single suitcase.”
“If someone had told me then where we’d be tonight... I never would have believed them.”
“Neither would I,” Luca admitted, his voice thick with humility.
“I had to lose everything I thought mattered to finally find out what was truly important.”

“Well,” Nia turned her head, pressing a soft kiss to his cheek, “you found it.”
“Yes, I did,” Luca whispered, tightening his arms around her. “And I’m never letting go.”
