The Ghost Protocol / Chapter 16 / 20 3

Part 17

I looked at Marcus,

noticing the slight hesitation in his eyes,

a look I knew all too well from our decades of working together.

"What's on your mind,

Marcus?"

I asked,

Không có mô tả ảnh.

setting my tea cup down,

my focus narrowing onto him.

He glanced at Lily,

then back to me,

as if deciding how much to say in front of her.

"It's fine,

Marcus,"

Lily said,

sensing his reluctance,

"I want to know everything,

no more secrets."

Marcus nodded slowly,

opening the manila folder,

and pulling out a single,

grainy photograph.

It showed a dusty street in a small coastal town,

somewhere in Central America,

with a lone figure walking away from the camera.

"We found this during the audit of Julian Vance's private accounts,"

Marcus explained,

sliding the picture across the table toward me.

"Julian wasn't just working with Victor,

he was answering to someone else,

a larger syndicate based out of Panama."

I picked up the photograph,

examining the figure,

noticing the distinctive military posture,

and a faded scar on the left wrist.

The cold familiarity of that image made my breath hitch,

a ghost from my past reemerging from the shadows of history.

"Thomas Thorne,"

I whispered,

the name tasting like ash in my mouth.

"Who is Thomas Thorne?"

Lily asked,

looking between the two of us,

sensing the sudden shift in the room's energy.

"He was my final case,

before I retired,"

I told her,

my eyes never leaving the photograph.

"An international broker of stolen wealth,

a man who specialized in erasing identities,

and liquidating illicit fortunes.

I thought I had cornered him in Berlin twenty-seven years ago,

but he vanished into the underground,

leaving no trail behind."

"It seems he never forgot you,

Daniel,"

Marcus said quietly,

"Julian’s records show that Thorne was the one who funded,

the entire operation to capture Lily’s trust.

Victor and Marianne were just his local puppets,

chosen because of their proximity to you."

The revelation hit me with the force of a physical blow,

the realization that this entire nightmare,

hadn't just been about greed.

It had been an act of vengeance,

a calculated strike from an old enemy,

designed to destroy me through my daughter.

"He wanted me to watch her disappear,"

I said,

my voice dropping to a low,

dangerous growl,

"He wanted me to feel the pain of losing everything,

just as he lost his empire in Berlin."

"We are tracking the accounts now,"

Marcus said,

standing up and placing his hand on my shoulder,

"But Thorne is a ghost,

he knows our protocols inside out."

"He knows your protocols,

Marcus,"

I said,

standing up beside him,

May you like

the old flame of the hunt burning bright within my chest,

"But he forgot mine."
