Chapter 6 - The Philadelphia Connection

The honeymoon phase inside the fortress of Roland Park was short-lived. Reality, cold and brutal, came crashing back three weeks later.

The Moretti family in Philadelphia had not backed down following Marco Moretti's death. Instead, Marco's older brother, Anthony Moretti—a ruthless, unpredictable psychopath known for using scorched-earth tactics—had taken full control of the syndicate.

Anthony wanted revenge, and he wanted Baltimore.

Vincent stood in his subterranean tactical room beneath the estate, staring at a wall covered in maps, surveillance photos, and wiretap transcripts. Caleb stood beside him, along with three of Vincent's top captains.

"Anthony Moretti has brought in mercenaries from New York," Caleb reported grimly. "They've set up a base of operations near the industrial shipyards in Curtis Bay. They are planning a massive assault on our central distribution warehouse tomorrow night."

"They want to hit us where we store our high-value imports," one of the captains added. "If they burn that warehouse, we lose fifty million dollars in inventory and our reputation as dock protectors is destroyed."

Vincent stood with his hands resting on the tactical table, his face carved from ice. "Let them come."

"Boss?" Caleb questioned.

"We feed them false intelligence," Vincent commanded coldly. "Make them believe the warehouse is lightly guarded. Let Anthony bring his entire crew into Curtis Bay. Once they enter the perimeter, we lock down the docks and eliminate them all at once."

"It's a trap," Caleb nodded, understanding the brutal brilliant strategy. "A total purge."

"Precisely," Vincent said. "Send word to all units. Operations begin at midnight tomorrow."

While Vincent planned a bloody war, Harper sat in her studio room, feeling an oppressive cloud hovering over the estate.

She wasn't stupid. She saw the extra armed guards patrolling the gardens, the secretive meetings in the basement, and the dark, exhausted look in Vincent’s eyes when he came to bed at 3:00 AM. She knew a storm was coming, and she felt utterly powerless to stop it.

That evening, as Vincent was preparing to leave for the docks, Harper intercepted him in the main hallway.

He was wearing black tactical gear under a heavy slate coat. A leather holster was strapped across his chest, housing a custom matte-black pistol.

Harper felt her breath catch in her throat. Seeing him armed for war made the reality of his life hit her like a punch to the stomach.

"You're going out," she said softly, her voice trembling slightly.

Vincent stopped, looking at her. The coldness in his eyes instantly melted into warmth as he looked at her. He walked over to her, taking her small hands in his massive, gloved ones.

"I have business to take care of tonight, Harper," he said gently.

"Dangerous business," she whispered, looking up at him with tear-filled eyes. "Vincent... please be careful. Promise me you'll come back."

Vincent leaned down, pressing his forehead against hers, breathing in her scent. "I have survived fifteen years in this city, Harper. But now I have a reason to come home. I will always come back to you."

He pulled her into a short, fierce kiss, tasting the salt of a tear that had slipped down her cheek.

"Caleb will stay here with twenty men to guard the house," Vincent instructed, pulling away reluctantly. "Stay inside. Lock the doors."

"Vincent—"

"I love you, Harper," he said quietly.

It was the first time he had said the words. The declaration hit the room with profound, weightless beauty.

May you like

Harper gasped, tears spilling over her cheeks. "I love you too, Vincent. Go, and come back to me."

Vincent turned and walked out the heavy doors, leaving her alone in the quiet stone foyer.
