Chapter 6 - THE COUNCIL OF SHADOWS

We docked at an abandoned industrial dry dock in Bridgeport, thirty miles up the coast. The facility was owned under seven layers of shell corporations, completely off the radar of the rival syndicates.
Roman set up an improvised intensive care unit in the climate-controlled administrative trailer. Within four hours of receiving the Prussian blue protocol, both boys had stabilized. Their core temperatures normalized, and the grey pallor on their skin began to give way to faint, healthy pink undertones.
I stayed by their side, monitoring their vitals every fifteen minutes, while Nathan stood outside the glass partition, watching over them like an unyielding guardian gargoyle.
At 4:30 AM, heavy black SUVs rolled into the dry dock’s gravel yard.
Four men stepped out, flanked by armed bodyguards who were immediately disarmed by Roman’s loyal perimeter team.
1. Vincent Valetti – Chief Financial Officer of the Coleman maritime portfolio.
2. Dominic Cross – Head of logistics and port security.
3. Victor Vance – Nathan’s brother-in-law, brother to Nathan’s deceased wife, Elena.
4. Senator Robert Sterling – The political liaison who shielded the Coleman enterprises from federal scrutiny.
Nathan walked into the hangar, his footsteps echoing like gunshots off the steel rafters. He wore a fresh black suit, but his eyes were pure obsidian.
I stood in the shadows near the trailer door, holding the tablet that displayed the decrypted financial logs Roman had extracted from Dr. Ashford’s private server.
"Nathan," Victor Vance spoke first, hurrying forward with open arms. "Thank God you and the boys are alive! We heard about the attack on the estate. Who did this? Was it the Castigliones?"
Nathan didn't embrace his brother-in-law. He stood motionless, his hands clasped behind his back.
"The boys were poisoned," Nathan said flatly.
A collective murmur of shock rippled through the four men.
"Poisoned?" Senator Sterling adjusted his tie, visibly sweating. "By whom? Good Lord, Nathan, what kind of monster targets children?"
"A monster who stood to inherit forty-nine percent of the Coleman maritime shipping lanes upon the death of both heirs," Nathan replied, his voice chillingly smooth.
Vincent Valetti shifted his weight. "Nathan, you know all four of us would bleed for this family. We helped you build this empire after Elena’s tragedy."
"Did you?" Nathan turned his gaze slowly to Victor Vance.
Victor’s smile faltered. "Nathan... what are you implying? Elena was my sister. Those boys are my blood."
"Elena died in a staged car crash on Route 9," I stepped out from the shadows, holding the tablet high. "The brake line failure was attributed to mechanical fatigue. But the electronic telemetry data pulled from her onboard computer was scrubbed remotely twenty minutes before the collision."
Victor’s eyes darted toward the exit doors. "Who the hell is this woman? Nathan, why are you letting a domestic servant lecture your inner council?"
"Because that domestic servant saved my sons' lives while you were planning their funeral," Nathan said, taking three deliberate steps forward.
"Show them, Sarah," Nathan commanded.
I tapped the screen, projecting the financial routing documents onto the large wall monitor.
"Three million dollars left Dr. Ashford’s offshore Cayman accounts over the past eight months," I explained. "The origin funds weren't from the Castigliones. They were routed through Vance Maritime Holdings—Victor’s private dummy firm in Panama."
The silence in the hangar was absolute.
Victor backed away, his face twisting from fabricated concern into a venomous sneer. "You never deserved this empire, Nathan! You were a street thug who seduced my sister and stole my family's legacy! The Vance family built these docks fifty years before you took over!"
"Your sister loved me," Nathan said, his voice dropping to a deadly, quiet register. "And you murdered her because she refused to sign over the trust funds."

"She was weak!" Victor screamed, reaching inside his coat.
Before his fingers could even grasp the handle of his weapon, Nathan closed the distance.
