The Monster in the Shed / Chapter 1 / 6

Chapter 1

The room erupted into absolute chaos,

as the heart monitor continued to scream loudly.

Nurses rushed through the heavy double doors,

their eyes wide with immediate,

terrifying panic.

I pushed my mother away forcefully,

using every single ounce of strength I had left in my exhausted body.

Bertha bumped awkwardly into a metal medical cart,

sending a shiny tray of surgical instruments crashing down to the hard floor.

"Get them out of here right now,"

I yelled at the police detective,

pointing a violently shaking finger at the two horrible women who shared my blood.

The tall detective grabbed my mother by her left elbow,

while a second uniformed officer quickly restrained my younger sister.

"You have absolutely no right to do this to me,"

my mother spat out angrily,

her true,

evil nature finally showing through her carefully crafted,

fake disguise.

"I am his loving grandmother,"

she insisted loudly,

trying desperately to pull her arm away from the strong grip of the law.

Hunter was crying softly now,

his tiny chest heaving with every shallow,

painful breath.

I turned my back entirely on the monsters,

and I leaned carefully over the cold metal bed rail.

"It is going to be okay,

my sweet boy,"

I whispered gently,

brushing a salty tear away from his swollen,

darkly bruised cheek.

"They are leaving right now,

and they will never be allowed to hurt you again."

The heavy hospital doors closed with a solid,

final thud,

shutting them out of his sterile room completely.

The terrible silence that followed was incredibly heavy,

broken only by the rhythmic,

steady beeping of the expensive life support machines.

The experienced pediatric surgeon stepped closer to the bed,

checking the clear IV lines connected to his fragile,

tiny arm.

"His heart rate is finally stabilizing,"

the doctor said quietly,

letting out a long,

relieved sigh of breath.

"But he needs absolute,

uninterrupted rest,

Mrs. Thompson."

I nodded slowly in agreement,

pulling a cheap plastic chair much closer to his bedside.

I held his uninjured hand tightly,

feeling the terrifying,

icy chill radiating from his small fingers.

The detective reentered the quiet room a few minutes later,

holding a small,

black leather notebook in his large hands.

"We have them both securely in police custody,"

he informed me in a very quiet,

respectful voice.

"But I need to ask you some incredibly difficult questions,

Abigail."

I looked up at him directly,

my tired eyes burning with a fierce,

unbreakable determination.

"Ask me absolutely anything,"

I replied instantly,

"I want them to rot in a dark prison for the rest of their miserable lives."

"Your brave son mentioned a shed,"

the detective began cautiously,

flipping to a fresh,

blank page in his official notes.

"He told the first responders that they put him in the dark,

and that there were very bad sounds inside of there."

My stomach twisted suddenly into a tight,

painful knot.

I remembered exactly how my mother always kept that old,

weathered wooden shed firmly locked,

claiming it was simply full of dangerous,

toxic gardening chemicals.

"I have never once been inside it,"

I admitted sadly,

feeling a sudden,

overwhelming wave of terrible guilt for never questioning her obvious lies.

"We sent a specialized forensics team to the house this morning,"

he continued grimly,

his facial expression growing incredibly dark and serious.

"They broke the heavy metal padlock,

and they found something you really need to know about."

My heart pounded violently against my ribs,

as I waited anxiously for him to deliver the terrible news.

"They found heavy iron chains,

Abigail,"

he said softly,

"and a small,

dirty mattress stained with what appears to be dried bl00d."

I gasped sharply for air,

feeling as if the solid floor had suddenly vanished completely beneath my feet.

My own mother had deliberately built a secret torture chamber,

and she had ruthlessly used it on my innocent,

defenseless child.

I swore to myself right then and there,

May you like

that I would destroy her life completely,

and I would never stop fighting until justice was fully served.
