Chapter 3

The morning of the preliminary bail hearing was incredibly cold,
with heavy,
dark storm clouds rolling aggressively across the gray Phoenix sky.
David walked closely beside me as we approached the massive courthouse,
his strong hand gripping mine firmly,
providing a silent,
steady anchor in the storm.
A massive crowd of aggressive reporters and flashing cameras swarmed the front steps,
shouting loud,
intrusive questions about the horrifying details of the abuse.
We ignored them completely,
pushing our way through the chaotic,
noisy crowd with the help of two armed court bailiffs.
When we finally entered the grand,
wood-paneled courtroom,
the heavy silence inside was a stark contrast to the madness outside.
I took my assigned seat in the very first row,
my heart pounding a frantic rhythm against my tight chest.
A heavy metal door opened slowly near the judge's high bench,
and my mother walked into the room,
followed closely by my terrified sister.
They were both wearing bright orange,
unflattering jail jumpsuits,
their wrists secured tightly together with heavy steel handcuffs.
My mother looked around the large room with an arrogant,
haughty expression,
acting as if she were a wealthy queen completely above the law.
She locked eyes with me for a brief,
chilling second,
and her lips actually curled into a sick,
defiant smirk.
Bertha,
however,
looked completely destroyed,
her hair a messy,
tangled bird's nest,
her eyes darting nervously around the intimidating room.
The stern,
no-nonsense judge entered the courtroom sharply,
banging his wooden gavel loudly to bring the official session to order.
The aggressive prosecutor stood up confidently,
listing the horrific,
extensive charges with a loud,
booming voice that echoed perfectly off the high walls.
"Attempted murder,
first-degree child abuse,
false imprisonment,
and criminal conspiracy,"
the prosecutor read,
each word landing like a heavy,
crushing blow against my mother's false bravado.
"The state requests that bail be denied entirely,
Your Honor,
given the extreme,
calculated cruelty of these unforgivable crimes."
My mother's expensive,
slick defense attorney quickly stood up to loudly object.
"My client is a respected,
elderly member of the local community,"
he argued smoothly,
"she is absolutely not a flight risk,
and these allegations are vastly exaggerated."
David shifted angrily in the wooden seat next to me,
his jaw clenched so tightly I could hear his teeth grinding together.
The judge peered strictly over his reading glasses,
staring directly down at my unapologetic,
cold-hearted mother.
"I have personally reviewed the terrifying photographs of the shed,"
the judge stated coldly,
his voice dripping with pure,
unfiltered disgust.
"I have also read the medical reports detailing the extensive,
prolonged torture inflicted upon a defenseless six-year-old child."
The judge banged his gavel down again,
the loud sound echoing like a violent gunshot.
"Bail is absolutely denied for both defendants,"
he ruled instantly,
"they will remain securely in county lockup until the final trial."
Bertha let out a loud,
wailing sob,
her knees buckling slightly as the armed guards quickly grabbed her arms.
My mother's arrogant smirk vanished completely,
replaced by a look of genuine,
furious shock.
As the guards dragged them roughly back toward the holding cells,
my mother turned her head one last time to glare aggressively at me.
"You are making a huge mistake,
Abigail,"
she screamed wildly,
her voice cracking with pure venom.
"He is a bad seed,
and you will eventually see the horrible truth."
I did not blink,
I did not flinch,
and I did not look away from her crazy,
wild eyes.
May you like
I just watched calmly as the heavy steel door slammed shut behind her,
trapping the evil monster exactly where she truly belonged.
