Chapter 4 - The Golden Cage

By 3:00 AM, the blood had been scrubbed from the ballroom marble, the bodies had been removed in unmarked vans, and the news of Don Marchand’s sudden "fatal heart attack" was already being whispered across the underworld.

I sat on the edge of a massive king-sized bed in the grandest guest suite of the Moretti estate. Emma was sound asleep beside me, wrapped in silk sheets, her rag doll tucked tightly under her arm. She had no idea that her simple act of honesty had just upended the entire American Mafia.

The door opened quietly, and Damiano walked in.

He had changed out of his blood-stained clothes into a dark cashmere sweater and black trousers. He looked less like a ruthless mob boss and more like a tired, dangerous man carrying the weight of a kingdom on his broad shoulders.

“She sleeps well,” Damiano remarked softly, stopping at the foot of the bed.

“She’s six,” I replied, my voice shaking with a mixture of exhaustion and anger. I stood up, stepping away from the bed so we wouldn't wake her. “Why did you do that out there, Damiano? Why did you tell those men I was taking Vivian’s place?”

Damiano watched me, his dark eyes tracking every movement of my face. “Because Vivian’s loyalists in Chicago will be looking for blood. They will realize that someone alerted me to the bomb. It won't take them long to figure out that a six-year-old girl walked up to my desk minutes before the meeting.”

My stomach dropped. “You put a target on us.”

“No,” Damiano corrected me sharply, stepping closer until he towered over me. “I did the exact opposite. If I kept you as a simple housekeeper, you would be vulnerable. An easy piece on the board for my enemies to wipe out quietly. But by declaring you mine—by claiming you in front of the commission—I made you untouchable. To strike at you now is an open declaration of total war against the entire Moretti family.”

I stared at him, torn between terror and an undeniable, electric pull that had been building between us since the moment he held my hand in the ballroom.

“I’m just a maid, Damiano,” I whispered, looking down at my apron. “I clean your floors. I don't belong in your world.”

Slowly, deliberately, Damiano reached out. His thick fingers gently lifted my chin, forcing me to look up into his dark, fierce eyes.

“You are not just a maid,” he said softly. “You are the woman who stood tall in a room full of murderers while your employer was targeted. You are the mother of the girl who saved my life. You have more courage in your little finger than Vivian Marchand had in her entire treacherous body.”

His thumb brushed gently across my cheekbone, sending a jolt of heat straight through my chest.

“I cannot offer you a quiet life, Sophia,” he murmured, his thumb trailing down to the base of my throat, feeling the rapid flutter of my pulse. “My world is violent, dark, and unforgiving. But I can offer you absolute protection. I can offer your daughter a future where no one will ever dare threaten her again.”

“And what do you expect from me in return?” I asked, my voice barely audible over the sound of my hammering heart.

Damiano leaned down, his lips inches from mine. “Stay. Stand at my side. Let me protect you.”

Before I could answer, a heavy knock rattled the suite door. Marco pushed his way inside, his face pale and sweating.

“Boss,” Marco said, his voice urgent. “We have a massive problem.”

May you like

Damiano turned slowly, his hand dropping from my chin. “Speak.”

“It’s Chicago,” Marco said, pulling a encrypted tablet from his coat. “Don Marchand’s brother, Dominic, just took control of the family. He knows Vivian was taken down. He’s already mobilized three hundred men... and they’re moving toward New York tonight.”
