Chapter 5 - The War for New York

The storm that hit New York that night wasn't just rain and lightning; it was blood and iron.
Dominic Marchand—a ruthless psychopath known throughout the Midwest as 'The Butcher'—had launched an all-out assault against the Moretti estate. He didn't care about rules, treaties, or commission approval. He wanted vengeance for his brother’s death and control of the East Coast, and he was willing to burn New York to the ground to get it.
By dawn, the Moretti estate had transformed into a military fortress. Heavy steel shutters descended over every window. Dozens of heavily armed men moved through the corridors, checking tactical gear and loading high-caliber rifles.
I stood on the second-floor balcony, watching Damiano issue orders to his lieutenants. He was dressed in a black tactical vest, a heavy custom pistol holstered at his hip. He moved with absolute authority, a natural general preparing for an unavoidable siege.
When he finished, he walked up the stairs toward me. The exhaustion on his face was masked by a cold, deadly determination.
“The perimeter is locked down,” Damiano said, stopping in front of me. “Marco is taking Emma to the underground bunker beneath the east wing. It’s reinforced with four feet of solid steel and concrete. She will be completely safe.”
“And me?” I asked, searching his eyes. “Where do I go?”
Damiano reached into his inner pocket and pulled out a sleek, silver 9mm handgun. He held it out to me, handle first.
I stared at it, taking a step back. “Damiano, I don't know how to shoot.”
“Then today you learn,” he said firmly, taking my hand and forcing my fingers around the grip. He wrapped his larger hands over mine, guiding my posture. “Safety is off. Pull the slide back to chamber a round. You aim for the center of the chest and you pull the trigger until the magazine is empty. Do you understand me?”
I looked at the cold steel in my hands, then up into his dark eyes. “You think they’re going to get inside.”
“I think Dominic Marchand is desperate,” Damiano replied brutally. “And desperate men make stupid, violent choices. If anyone gets past me, Sophia... you protect yourself. You protect our daughter.”
Our daughter. The words hung in the air between us, heavy and solemn. He hadn't meant to say it, but the truth of it vibrated through the silent hallway. In eighteen hours, this brutal Mafia boss had stepped into the empty void of our lives and claimed us as his own.
Suddenly, the floor shook.
A massive explosion thundered at the front gates of the estate, rattling the heavy crystal chandeliers above us. Siren alarms immediately began to wail throughout the mansion, their red lights flashing against the dark wood paneling.
“They’re here,” Damiano hissed.
He pulled me into his chest, his arms wrapping around me in a tight, fierce embrace. For a second, his lips pressed hard against mine—a rough, desperate kiss that tasted of danger and promises made in the dark.
“Go to the bunker,” he commanded against my lips. “Lock the door from the inside. I will come back for you.”
“Damiano—”
“Go!” he shouted, drawing his weapon as he turned and sprinted down the grand staircase toward the incoming gunfire.
I didn't waste another second. I tucked the silver pistol into the waist of my pants and ran straight for the underground stairs, my heart pounding in my ears.
Down in the bunker, Marco stood guard outside the reinforced steel door. Emma was sitting on a plush sofa inside, hugging her rag doll, her little face pale but brave.
“Mommy!” she cried, running into my arms the second I entered.
I wrapped my arms around her, rocking her back and forth on the floor. “I’m here, sweetie. I’m right here.”
For two agonizing hours, the sounds of war echoed through the concrete walls above us. Thunderous gunfire, shattering glass, explosions, and screaming echoed down from the mansion. Every second felt like an eternity. I sat with my back against the steel door, the silver pistol clutched tightly in my shaking hands, praying to a God I hadn't spoken to in years to bring Damiano back to us alive.
Then... the noise stopped.
An eerie, terrifying silence settled over the estate.
Minutes stretched into absolute torture. No gunshots. No footsteps. Nothing.
I stood up slowly, stepping toward the heavy steel door. “Marco?” I called out.
No answer.
My blood ran cold. I raised the silver pistol, thumbing the safety off just as Damiano had taught me. I approached the small, bulletproof glass viewing window in the door and peeked through.
Marco was on the floor, bleeding heavily from his shoulder, disarmed.
Standing over him was a massive, scarred man in a leather jacket—Dominic Marchand. And in his hand, he held a heavy tactical detonator wired to breaching charges set against our bunker door.
“Open the door, little maid!” Dominic’s voice boomed through the external speaker system, echoing hideously inside our small room. “Open it, or I blow this entire steel frame to pieces and dig your daughter out of the rubble!”
Emma shrank back into the corner, weeping silently.
My hands shook furiously around the grip of the gun. I was alone. Damiano was either dead or captured upstairs. There was no one left to save us.
“You have more courage in your little finger than Vivian Marchand had in her entire body.” Damiano’s voice echoed in my head.
I swallowed the lump of sheer terror in my throat. I looked at my terrified daughter, then down at the weapon in my hands. I took a deep, steadying breath.
I unlocked the heavy steel wheel on the door and pulled it open.
Dominic Marchand grinned, a yellow-toothed smile of pure triumph as he stepped into the doorway, raising his shotgun. “Smart girl. Where is the little brat who ruined my family’s—”
BANG.
I didn't wait for him to finish his sentence. I raised the silver pistol with both hands, aimed straight for the center of his chest, and pulled the trigger.
BANG. BANG. BANG.
Dominic’s eyes widened in utter disbelief as three heavy rounds tore through his chest vest. He stumbled backward, coughing blood, crashing heavily against the concrete wall before slumping onto the floor, motionless.
I stood in the doorway, the gun smoking in my hands, my body trembling violently.
Footsteps thundered down the hallway. I frantically raised the gun again—
“Sophia! Stop!”
Damiano burst around the corner, his face covered in soot and blood, his suit torn to shreds. He took one look at Dominic’s body on the floor, then at the smoking gun in my hands, and stopped dead in his tracks.
The pistol slipped from my numb fingers, clattering onto the floor.
Damiano crossed the distance between us in two strides. He wrapped his arms around me, pulling me hard against his chest, burying his face into my neck as I finally burst into sobbing tears.
“You’re safe,” he breathed, his voice cracking with an emotion I had never heard from him before. “God help me, you’re safe.”
Emma ran out of the room, throwing her little arms around both of our legs. Damiano immediately dropped to one knee, wrapping his massive arm around Emma too, pulling us both into an unbreakable embrace.

Outside, the morning sun was finally breaking through the heavy storm clouds, illuminating the smoke rising from the estate. The war was over. The Marchand family was gone. New York had a new king, but as Damiano held us tight against his chest in the quiet darkness of the bunker, I realized the truth.
He wasn't just protecting us anymore. We were his family now. And nothing in this world would ever tear us apart.
