The rain against the thick, reinforced glass of Whitmore Dynamics did not sound like rain. It sounded like gravel being hurled by an angry hand against a vault door.
Down on the floor of the primary cleanroom, three levels beneath the asphalt of San Diego’s coastal technology corridor, the storm was only a vibration—a faint, rhythmic hum that set the water in Rachel Bennett’s mop bucket dancing in tiny, concentric silver rings.

Rachel swiped her thumb over the screen, her heart giving a slow, dull thud. Eighteen thousand dollars. She might as well have been asked to hand over eighteen million.
The second message was shorter, sent at 8:42 PM from her landlord:
FINAL NOTICE: Notice to Pay or Quit. Rent for September and October remains unpaid ($4,200 total). Eviction filing will proceed Monday morning at 9:00 AM sharp. No further extensions will be granted.

Rachel felt a wave of heat climb her own neck. She thought of her sister’s text message. She thought of the $18,400 hospital bill waiting on her phone. She thought of the eviction notice that would be filed on Monday morning. She stood there, stripped of her dignity in front of fifty strangers, used as a prop in a billionaire's temper tantrum.

Rachel froze, her mouth open.
"I'm not scared," Emma whispered. "And you aren't broken."
Emma turned back toward the massive steel reactor core as the red warning lights began to flash across the ceiling.
