Chapter 5 - THE HUNDRED MILLION DOLLAR COUNTDOWN

The cleanroom was packed to capacity. Word had spread through the entire building, and now administrative staff, junior programmers, and facility night-guards were crowded along the glass galleries overlooking the primary floor.

Grant Whitmore stood at the apex of the observation platform. His eyes were cold, calculating, and fixed entirely on the large digital timer above the main display.

Rachel stood beside Emma near the central console. Dr. Hale was at the controls, his fingers suspended over the sequence initiation keys.

"Anchors decoupled," Hale announced, his voice trembling through the speakers. "The secondary cooling line is now completely isolated from the old structural foundation. Core pressure nominal."

Whitmore didn't take his eyes off the clock. "Run the program."

Hale pressed the button.

The violet light ignited within the core once again. The deep, bass hum filled the room, but this time, the strange, rattling shudder beneath their feet was noticeably absent.

"Plasma density at maximum," Hale read off his screens. "Vibration levels... down eighty-four percent!"

A quiet whisper rippled through the assembled engineers. Whitmore stepped closer to the glass screen, his jaw working silently.

Rachel held her breath, her fingers clutching Emma’s small hand so tightly her knuckles turned white. Emma simply stood there, watching the water in a fresh plastic cup sitting on the console desk. The surface of the water was perfectly, smoothly still, rippling only in neat, unbroken circular rings.

The entire room went dead silent. This was the mark where the machine had always begun its fatal shriek.

The digital clock ticked past ninety seconds.

There was no scream. There was no metallic grinding. There was no emergency power drop.

The Prometheus Engine roared onward, a steady, glorious, pure violet star burning inside its quartz cage, outputting two gigawatts of clean, continuous energy directly into the test grid.

"Stable!" Dr. Hale suddenly screamed, leaping out of his chair with his hands thrown into the air. "Harmonic stability at ninety-nine point nine percent! We have continuous ignition! IT WORKS!"

The entire laboratory erupted into chaos.

Engineers roared, hugging each other, throwing papers into the air, weeping tears of pure exhaustion and joy. Six weeks of nightmare pressure had dissolved in ten seconds of pure, unbroken operational perfection.

In the middle of the roaring crowd, Rachel dropped to her knees, pulling Emma into a fierce, desperate hug. Tears streamed down her face, washing away weeks of fear, shame, and despair.

On the platform above, Grant Whitmore stood frozen. He looked at the glowing display, then at his screaming engineers, and finally down at the mother and daughter hugging on the cleanroom floor.

His two-billion-dollar engine was saved. His company was rescued. His fortune was secured.

And he owed it all to a janitor he had publicly mocked thirty minutes ago.
