Chapter 10 - The Break-In at Mission Bay

The night before the scheduled charity gala,
a heavy,
unnatural fog rolled into San Francisco,
completely swallowing the marina and cutting off my condo from the rest of the world.
The streetlights below were reduced to dim,
blurry halos of light,
and the constant hum of the city seemed muffled by the thick,
moist air.
I sat in my dark living room,
the lights turned off to prevent anyone outside from tracking my movements through the large windows.
The silence inside the apartment was heavy,
broken only by the rhythmic,
distant tolling of a foghorn out in the bay.
At exactly two in the morning,
a subtle,
scratching sound from the front door lock made my body go completely rigid,
my heart leaping into my throat.
It wasn't the electronic chime of a valid keycard;
it was the distinct,
metallic clicking of manual lock-picking tools working against my deadbolt.
They weren't waiting for the legal system to break me anymore;
they were coming to take the drive back by force,
using the cover of the fog to commit a silent execution.
I slipped out of my chair,
moving across the dark hardwood floor like a ghost,
my bare feet making absolutely no sound.
I reached into the kitchen drawer and pulled out a long,
heavy chef's knife,
the cold steel of the blade offering a small comfort against the blooming terror in my chest.
I crept toward the entryway,
watching the heavy metal door handle slowly turn downward as the lock finally clicked open with a sickeningly loud snap.
The door pushed open slowly,
allowing a sliver of the dim hallway light to cut through the darkness of my apartment.
A tall,
bulky figure stepped into the space,
his face completely obscured by a black ski mask,
a heavy crowbar held tightly in his gloved right hand.
He moved with a practiced,
predatory confidence,
clearly expecting to find a sleeping,
defenseless woman in her bed.
Before he could take another step,
I stepped out from behind the wall,
the chef's knife raised high,
the blade catching the faint light.
"Get out of my house,"
I hissed,
my voice a sharp,
lethal whisper that made the intruder freeze in absolute surprise.
He recovered instantly,
lunging forward with a muffled curse,
swinging the heavy iron crowbar directly at my head,
aiming to crush my skull just as Adrian had done with the plate.
I ducked beneath the swing,
the heavy metal whistling past my ear,
shattering a glass vase on the side table behind me into a thousand pieces.
The force of his swing threw him off balance,
and I used the opportunity to drive my weight forward,
slashing the knife across his extended forearm.
The blade sliced through his jacket and skin,
eliciting a sharp howl of pain as he dropped the crowbar onto the floor with a heavy,
metallic thud.
He stumbled backward out into the hallway,
clutching his bleeding arm,
his eyes wide with a sudden,
shocked realization that I was willing to kill to protect myself.
I didn't chase him;
instead,
I slammed the heavy door shut,
throwing the manual security bolts into place,
and immediately activated the building's emergency alarm system.
A deafening,
piercing siren began to wail throughout the entire complex,
accompanied by flashing red strobe lights that illuminated the hallway outside.
Through the peephole,
I watched the intruder flee toward the emergency stairwell,
leaving a trail of dark,
crimson drops on the carpet behind him.
I sank to my knees against the locked door,
my breathing ragged,
my entire body shaking from the adrenaline rush of the life-or-death struggle.
They had tried to kill me in my own sanctuary,
proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that they were completely out of options and running out of time.
The war was no longer confined to courtrooms and news articles;
it was a physical battle for survival,
and I had just survived the first assassination attempt.
I looked at the blood on the floor,
then down at my own clean hands,
realizing that the time for hesitation was officially over.
Tomorrow night was the Caldwell charity gala,
May you like
the night the estate would be empty,
and the night I would finally enter the viper's nest to steal their crown jewels.
