Chapter 11 - The Infiltration of the Viper's Nest

The Caldwell estate in Napa Valley was dark and imposing against the night sky,

its sprawling vineyards looking like rows of silent,

watching soldiers under the moonlight.

The grand mansion,

usually blazing with lights and filled with the noise of arrogant wealth,

was completely dark and dead silent.

As Maya had promised,

the entire family had departed for the city gala two hours prior,

leaving the grounds vulnerable to my intrusion.

I wore dark,

utilitarian clothing,

creeping through the edge of the vineyard until I reached the heavy wrought-iron security gate at the back of the property.

I pushed against the metal,

and with a soft,

satisfying click,

the gate swung open smoothly,

Maya having successfully unlatched the mechanism from the inside.

I moved quickly across the open lawn,

avoiding the paths of the automated security floodlights,

until I reached the side glass door leading into Richard's private study.

I used a piece of heavy tape and a small glass cutter to quietly remove a circle of glass near the handle,

reaching my hand inside to unlock the door.

The air inside the study was cold,

smelling of old leather,

expensive tobacco,

and the distinct scent of corrupt power that defined the Caldwell patriarch.

I moved directly toward the main garden window,

looking out at the antique stone sundial that sat in the center of the manicured courtyard.

Using a pair of high-powered night-vision binoculars,

I focused on the base of the sundial,

reading the engraved geographic coordinates carved into the weathered stone.

The numbers were precise:

thirty-eight point four,

and negative one hundred and twenty-two point three,

the exact mathematical location of their first criminal enterprise.

I turned back to the study,

approaching the heavy,

mahogany bookcase that lined the far wall,

searching for the hidden seam Maya had described.

I pressed my fingers against a hidden spring latch behind a row of law books,

and a section of the wall swung outward with a soft hiss,

revealing a massive,

solid steel wall safe.

My hands were sweating inside my thin rubber gloves as I spun the mechanical dial,

entering the coordinates as the combination numbers.

Thirty-eight,

right to twenty-two,

left to four,

and a final turn back to three,

holding my breath as I pulled the heavy handle downward.

The heavy locking bolts disengaged with a deep,

metallic clunk,

and the safe door swung open,

exposing the deepest secrets of the Caldwell dynasty to the light of my flashlight.

Inside sat stacks of cash,

unmarked gold bars,

and row after row of legal documents details their illegal corporate holdings across the globe.

But resting in the center of the top shelf was a single,

thick,

black leather ledger,

its cover worn down by years of secret usage by Richard himself.

I pulled the book from the safe,

opening the pages to find hundreds of handwritten entries detailing dates,

bank names,

routing numbers,

and the names of the corrupt politicians they had bought.

It was the holy grail of financial prosecution,

the absolute,

irrefutable proof of a decade-long criminal empire that would destroy every single member of the clan.

Before I could close the safe,

the overhead lights of the study suddenly flashed to life,

blinding me with a sudden,

searing glare that made me drop the flashlight.

"I knew you wouldn't be able to resist coming here,"

a cold,

mocking voice spoke from the doorway,

sending a shockwave of terror straight through my heart.

I turned slowly,

my eyes adjusting to the light,

to find Adrian standing in the doorway,

a sleek,

black revolver held tightly in his hand,

May you like

his face twisted in a triumphant,

lethal grin.
