Chapter 1 - THE SHATTERED PACT

The storm raging outside the 80th-floor Manhattan penthouse was nothing compared to the tempest inside.
Julian Vance,
the golden boy of Wall Street,
stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows,
the city lights reflecting off his perfectly tailored Tom Ford suit.
In his hand,
he held a thick manila folder—the newly drafted amendment to their prenuptial agreement.
Across the marble kitchen island stood Evelyn.
She looked pale,
her simple silk dress a stark contrast to the aggressive opulence surrounding her.
"Sign it, Evelyn,"
Julian’s voice was dangerously quiet,
dripping with cold condescension.
"You’ve been playing the dutiful wife for five years,
but let’s be real.
You brought nothing into this marriage,
and you’ll leave with exactly that.
Sign the amendment,
or I file for divorce tomorrow and unleash my lawyers.
You’ll be blacklisted from every social circle in New York before sunset."
Evelyn looked at the document.
It was a financial death warrant.
It stripped her of even the modest alimony promised in their original prenup,
claiming she had "failed to support his executive image."
"I won't sign this, Julian,"
Evelyn said,
her voice trembling but resolute.
"This is cruel.
I gave up my career for your firm.
I stood by you when the media accused you of insider trading."
"You did what you were bought to do!"
Julian snapped,
his handsome face distorting into something ugly.
In a flash of pure,
unchecked rage,
Julian stepped forward.
He grabbed his crystal tumbler,
filled to the brim with amber scotch,
and hurled the liquid directly into Evelyn’s face.
The burning alcohol stung her eyes.
Before she could gasp,
Julian lunged,
grabbing her shoulder and shoving her violently backward.
Evelyn lost her footing on the slick marble floor.
She crashed into a nearby display pedestal,
sending a priceless Baccarat crystal vase shattering to the ground.
Smash.
Evelyn hit the floor hard,
her hands instinctively reaching out to break her fall.
A sharp,
searing pain shot up her right arm.
She looked down.
A jagged shard of the shattered crystal had sliced deep into her palm.
Crimson blood immediately began to pool on the pristine white Carrara marble,
mixing with the spilled scotch and shattered glass.
Julian didn't even flinch.
He stood over her,
looking down like an emperor addressing a peasant.
"Look at you,"
he sneered,
tossing the unsigned papers onto her bleeding lap.
"Bleeding onto my floor.
You are a parasite,
Evelyn.
I built an empire.
You are just a ghost living in it.
Clean yourself up,
sign the papers,
and get out of my sight."
He turned on his heel and walked out,
slamming the heavy mahogany door behind him.
On the floor,
amidst the glass and the blood,
Evelyn didn't cry.
Slowly,
she closed her injured hand into a tight fist,
ignoring the bite of the glass.
She looked at her blood staining the prenup.
A cold,
razor-sharp smile slowly spread across her face.
Julian thought he was the apex predator.
He had no idea that the prey had just closed the trap.
The silence of the room was heavy,
suffocating,
yet it felt like the most liberating moment of her life.
She didn't reach for a tissue.
She didn't reach for a bandage.
She reached for her phone,
hidden deep in her pocket.
She sent a single,
pre-written text to an untraceable burner number.
The message was short,
code for an operation five years in the making.
"The vase is broken,"
she whispered to herself.

Now,
the real game could begin.
