Chapter 12 - Rachel’s Panic and the Cracking Alliance

Across town in Roland Park,
the reality of the impending legal storm hit Rachel Palmer like a physical blow,
her phone had been ringing nonstop with rejection notices from commercial lenders and medical suppliers,
her boutique clinic’s accounts were frozen,
and now a process server had taped an official notice of fraudulent conveyance and asset reclamation onto her front door,
she slammed the heavy oak door shut,
her breathing coming in ragged,
shallow gasps,
she dialed Grant’s private cell phone with shaking fingers,
screaming the moment he answered,
“Grant!
There’s a notice on my front door from Vance & Sterling!
They’re claiming my house belongs to Mara because you used joint funds to buy it!”
“Rachel, keep your voice down,” Grant hissed from his office,
where he was currently packing his personal belongings into a cardboard box after being formally suspended by the hospital board,
“I am dealing with the absolute collapse of my career right now,
the board just voted nine to zero to strip my medical directorship!”
“I don't give a damn about your directorship!” Rachel shrieked,
tears of rage spilling down her face,
“You promised me security!
You promised me that if I left my life in Chicago and moved to Baltimore,
you would take care of me and Sophie!”
“I took care of you for four years while you lived in a million-dollar house without working a single day!” Grant roared back,
his veneer of calm entirely shattered,
“And now because I tried to secure blood for Sophie’s surgery while my own son was dying,
my entire life is being burned to ash!
Don't you dare lecture me about promises,
Rachel,
you were nothing more than an expensive distraction that I was arrogant enough to believe I could afford!”
The silence that followed was suffocating,
the grand romance built on stolen moments and lavish gifts had finally curdled into mutual hatred,
Rachel’s voice dropped to a venomous whisper,
“If you think I’m going down alone,
Grant,
you’re insane,
I have every text message,
every email,
and every financial instruction you ever sent me stored in a cloud drive,
and I will hand every single byte of it to Mara’s lawyers before the sun sets.”
She hung up before he could answer,
leaving Grant standing in his empty office,
staring at a half-packed cardboard box,
May you like
realizing that his fortress of lies had finally collapsed inward,
burying him beneath its ruins.
