Chapter 19 - Whitmore Tower Without the Whitmores

Three years later,
Whitmore Heart Center had undergone a complete corporate rebranding,
dropped the family name entirely to become the Baltimore Regional Pediatric Institute,
Alistair Vance presided over a thriving institution focused on community care and uncompromised emergency reserves,
Grant Whitmore’s name had been scrubbed from the brass plaques,
his portraits removed from the executive gallery,
and his legacy reduced to a cautionary tale taught to first-year medical residents about the dangers of hubris and misplaced priorities,
rumors occasionally surfaced in the local papers about Grant—living in a cramped suburban apartment,
teaching introductory biology at a community college,
and trying unsuccessfully to reach out to Rachel Palmer,
who had long since vanished into obscurity after her own legal settlements collapsed,
he had become what he always feared most:
an ordinary man,
invisible to the world he once dominated,
reminded every single day that power purchased at the expense of family is nothing more than a lease on ruin,
he had signed away his family with a stroke of a pen,
May you like
and in return,
the world had signed him out of history.
