Chapter 3 - The Ghost of a Marriage

The drive back to our sprawling penthouse in the historic district was entirely silent,
save for the sound of my own breathing.
I parked my car in the secure underground garage,
taking a moment to grip the steering wheel until my knuckles turned white.
This car,
this penthouse,
this luxurious life,
all of it had been built on a foundation of lies and manipulation.
I had met Grant when we were both in college,
back when he was just an ambitious boy with big dreams and empty pockets.
My family had the money,
the connections,
and the social standing that he so desperately craved.
I had given him everything,
opening doors for him that would have otherwise remained permanently shut.
And this was how he repaid me,
by bringing his mistress to witness the heartbeat of my child.
I took the private elevator up to our apartment,
the doors opening directly into our grand foyer.
The penthouse was vast,
filled with modern art and expensive furniture that I had carefully curated over the years.
But today,
it felt like a hollow mausoleum,
a monument to a dead marriage that had been rotting from the inside out.
I walked into the master bedroom,
opening my closet to look at the rows of designer clothes and elegant gowns.
I grabbed a large leather duffel bag from the top shelf,
placing it on the bed with a soft thud.
I began to pack,
not frantically,
but with a precise,
methodical rhythm that kept my mind focused.
I packed my essential documents,
my passports,
my medical records,
and the legal papers my father had made me sign before our wedding.
Grant had laughed at the prenuptial agreement back then,
calling it a formality that we would never need because he loved me too much.
But my father had been a wise man,
a man who knew how to spot a predator from a mile away.
He had ensured that my personal inheritance,
as well as any assets brought into the marriage from my family's trust,
were ironclad.
As I was packing,
my eyes fell on the nightstand on Grant's side of the bed.
A leather-bound journal sat there,
one that he usually kept locked in his desk at his corporate office.
He must have brought it home last night,
forgetting to put it away in his haste to leave this morning.
My heart gave a sudden,
painful squeeze as I reached out and picked it up.
It wasn't a diary of thoughts,
but rather a logbook of financial transactions and meetings.
I flipped through the pages,
my eyes skimming over columns of numbers and dates.
Then,
I saw a name that made me freeze:
Cynthia Vance.
Beside her name was a list of wire transfers,
totaling hundreds of thousands of dollars from our joint investment account.
My breathing hitched as I realized the extent of the betrayal went far beyond a mere physical affair.
He was draining our shared wealth,
funding her lavish lifestyle with money that belonged to our future child.
But as I dug deeper into the pages,
I found something even more disturbing.
There was a scheduled meeting with a family law attorney,
dated two months ago,
with notes scribbled in the margin.
"Custody evaluation,"
the note read,
followed by,
"Vivienne's psychological instability."
A cold dread washed over me as I realized what they were planning.
They weren't just trying to drive me out of my own life,
they were planning to take my baby away from me before she was even born.
I gripped the edges of the book,
my knuckles turning white,
as the puzzle pieces began to click into place.
This wasn't just a drama,
it was a coordinated attack on my motherhood,
my sanity,
and my future.
But they had made one fatal mistake,
May you like
they had assumed I would be weak,
and that assumption would be their ultimate undoing.
