Chapter 9 - The Trap Snaps Shut

Monday morning arrived with a clear,
blue sky,
the sun rising high over the city,
casting long shadows across the streets.
Grant was in high spirits,
humming to himself as he adjusted his silk tie in the mirror.
"Today is the day,
Vivienne,"
he said,
not looking at me but smiling at his own reflection.
"Today,
the Whitaker empire expands,
and we enter the big leagues."
"I am very happy for you,
Grant,"
I said,
my voice a quiet,
subdued murmur as I handed him his briefcase.
"You should be,"
he said,
giving me a quick,
distracted kiss on the cheek before heading out the door.
"I'll see you tonight,
we'll have a bottle of champagne to celebrate."
"Yes,"
I whispered to the empty room as the door clicked shut behind him,
"we certainly will."
The moment he was gone,
I called Victoria,
"He's on his way to the office."
"Understood,"
she replied.
"Our team is ready."
"The moment we get confirmation that the contract is signed,
we will file the divorce papers and freeze all assets."
I spent the next two hours packing the rest of my belongings,
loading them into a moving van that Victoria had arranged.
I left nothing behind but the hollow shell of a life I no longer wanted or needed.
At eleven-thirty,
my phone buzzed with a text message from Victoria:
"Contract signed.
The trap is sprung."
Within minutes,
the legal machinery began to grind,
crushing everything Grant had worked for.
The joint accounts,
containing over three million dollars of my family's wealth,
were instantly frozen by court order.
The divorce petition,
detailing Grant's adultery,
financial theft,
and conspiracy to commit medical fraud,
was filed in the family court.
A process server was already on his way to Grant’s office,
carrying a stack of documents that would change his life forever.
I stood in the empty living room of the penthouse,
looking around one last time,
feeling no regret,
only a profound sense of freedom.
I walked out of the apartment,
handing the keys to the building's concierge,
and drove away.
I was going to a private,
secure estate owned by my family,
a place where Grant could never reach me.
As I drove,
my phone began to ring,
Grant’s name flashing on the screen.
I didn't answer,
letting it ring until it went to voicemail,
knowing he was just beginning to realize what had happened.
The silence of the car was beautiful,
broken only by the soft hum of the engine,
May you like
as I took my first breath of a new,
untangled life.
