Chapter 4 - THE TRUTH UNVEILED

Chloe woke up to the smell of sterile linen and expensive lavender.

The bright morning sun was filtering through large, floor-to-ceiling windows.

She was lying in a massive bed with silk sheets that felt like clouds.

She tried to sit up, but a sharp pain in her hands reminded her of the gala.

She looked down and saw both of her hands neatly wrapped in clean white bandages.

The burning on her cheek had subsided, replaced by a soothing cooling gel.

"You should rest, Chloe," a gentle voice spoke from the corner of the room.

Chloe gasped and looked over, seeing Arthur Harrington sitting in an armchair.

He was no longer wearing his tuxedo, but a simple, elegant gray suit.

He looked tired, as if he had stayed awake all night watching over her.

"Where am I? Who are you?" Chloe asked, fear creeping back into her voice.

She tried to pull the blanket up to hide herself, feeling out of place.

Arthur stood up and walked slowly to the side of her bed.

He didn't want to frighten her, so he kept a respectful distance.

"You are in my private estate, safe from Victoria Vance and everyone else," he said.

"As for who I am... my name is Arthur Harrington," he introduced himself.

Chloe’s eyes widened as she recognized the legendary name from the news.

He was the billionaire king of shipping, real estate, and technology.

"Why did you bring me here? I can't afford to pay for any of this," Chloe cried.

She thought about her rent, her hospital bills, and her lost job.

Arthur sat on the edge of the bed, his expression filled with deep regret.

"You don't owe me anything, Chloe. In fact, I owe you everything," he said.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out an old, faded photograph.

He gently placed it on the blanket near her bandaged hands.

Chloe looked at the photo and froze, her heart skipping a beat.

It was a picture of a beautiful woman who looked exactly like her, smiling brightly.

The woman in the photo was holding a tiny baby wrapped in a pink blanket.

On the baby's exposed shoulder, a distinct crescent-shaped birthmark was visible.

"That woman was my daughter, Elena," Arthur said, his voice cracking with emotion.

"She ran away twenty years ago because I disapproved of the man she loved."

"She died in poverty, and we never found her child," he explained, tears in his eyes.

"Until last night, when I saw that same birthmark on your shoulder."

Chloe stared at the photograph, then at her own reflection in the window glass.

The pieces of her broken past suddenly began to fit together perfectly.
