Chapter 10 - The Calm Before the Storm

By the time Mark returned to Claire's house, the moon was high in the sky, casting long shadows across the lawn.
He walked inside to find the house quiet, the only light coming from a single lamp in the living room.
Claire was sitting on the sofa, a book open in her lap, but she looked up immediately as he entered.
"How did it go?" she whispered, standing up to greet him with a warm, supportive hug.
"Slowly," Mark sighed, running a hand through his hair. "The police are working on it, but it takes time."
"I'm getting a restraining order first thing in the morning. How is Emma doing?"
"She's asleep," Claire said, gesturing toward the stairs. "She was terrified you wouldn't come back, Mark."
"She thinks she caused all of this. Evelyn really did a number on her self-esteem over these past few months."
Mark felt a familiar pang of guilt, a sharp reminder of his own negligence during his period of grief.
"I know," he muttered, his voice thick with emotion. "I should have seen it sooner, Claire. I was just so lost."
"Don't blame yourself now," Claire urged gently. "You're doing the right thing now, and that's what matters."
Mark walked up the stairs quietly, his footsteps muffled by the carpet as he approached the guest room.
He pushed the door open to see Emma curled up in the center of the bed, her breathing soft and rhythmic.
He walked over and sat on the edge of the mattress, watching her face relax in sleep, free from the day's terror.
He reached out, gently brushing a stray lock of hair away from her forehead, his heart swelling with a fierce protectiveness.
"I will fix this, Emma," he whispered into the darkness of the room. "I will bring back your smile, no matter what it takes."
He lay down beside her, not wanting to leave her alone for even a single second during this fragile peace.
As he finally closed his eyes, he allowed himself to believe, just for a moment, that the worst was behind them.
But miles away, in a darkened apartment, Evelyn was staring at her phone, her face twisted in an expression of pure rage.
She had just received an alert that her access to the company's server had been permanently revoked.

She knew Mark had found out, and she wasn't about to let him win without a fight.
The game had changed, and she was prepared to play dirty to ensure his total destruction.
