Chapter 12 - The Legal Shield

"Mark, calm down and breathe," his lawyer, Richard, said through the phone speaker, his voice a steady anchor in the storm.
"I have the documents right here. Evelyn is playing a very dangerous game, but she has overplayed her hand."
"She filed a false report with CPS, Richard!" Mark shouted, pacing the floor of his study like a caged animal.
"They could come and take Emma away from me today! I can't let that happen!"
"They won't take her immediately," Richard explained patiently. "An investigator will be assigned to visit your home first."
"We have the evidence from the police station regarding her extortion attempt, which completely destroys her credibility."
"I am filing an emergency motion for a restraining order right now, using the digital forensics David provided."
"When the CPS worker arrives, you will show them the police report and explain that this is a retaliatory accusation."
Mark leaned against his desk, his breathing finally slowing down as the legal strategy took shape in his mind.
"Are you sure they won't just take her, Richard? I can't lose her, I just can't."
"I am sure, Mark. You are a devoted father, and anyone who looks at your record can see that clearly."
"But you need to remain calm when they arrive. If you lose your temper, it will play right into her narrative of instability."
"I understand," Mark muttered, clenching his fists. "I will be a rock for Emma."
"Good. I'm heading to the courthouse now to get the judge's signature on the protective order. Hang tight."
Mark ended the call and walked back into the kitchen, his heart aching as he saw Emma sitting quietly by her plate.
He walked over and sat down beside her, taking her small hand in his, feeling the warmth of her skin.
"Emma, some people are going to come visit our house later today," he said softly, choosing his words with extreme care.
"They are nice people whose job is to make sure kids are safe and happy."
"Did Evelyn send them?" Emma asked, her voice dropping into that familiar whisper of fear.
Mark hesitated, then decided that honesty was the only way to keep her trust. "Yes, she did."
"But they are going to see that you are safe with me, and they are going to help us make sure she leaves us alone forever."

Emma looked into his eyes, her expression serious. "I'll tell them the truth, Daddy. I'll tell them you're the best dad."
Mark felt a tear slip down his cheek, his love for her burning brighter than any fear Evelyn could ever inflict.
