Chapter 18 - THE WHISPER OF THE PAST

A year after the library opening,

our lives had settled into a rhythm so ordinary it almost felt miraculous.

The penthouse was filled with the sound of laughter,

music,

and the patter of little feet running down the hallway.

I had stepped down from the active management of Vitelli Logistics entirely,

handing the reins over to Matteo and a board of directors while retaining our philanthropic trust.

One crisp October afternoon,

as I sat on the terrace drinking my morning coffee and watching the sailboats drift across Lake Michigan,

Alina walked out and handed me a small,

weathered envelope.

What is this,

I asked,

turning it over in my hands.

It was left at the front desk downstairs addressed to both of us,

Alina said,

her voice calm.

The courier said it was an old archival file from the federal courthouse downtown.

I opened the envelope carefully and slid out a single sheet of yellowed paper.

It was an old police report from six years ago,

detailing the night Alina first went into hiding.

At the bottom,

scribbled in handwriting I hadn't seen in over a decade,

was a note from an old detective who had long since retired.

To Marco Vitelli.

She never wanted to run from you.

She ran to keep you from destroying yourself.

And in the end,

your love brought her back.

I stared at the note for a long time,

feeling a profound wave of peace wash over me.

Alina leaned against my shoulder,

reading the words over my paper.

Do you remember who wrote that,

she asked softly.

Detective Vance,

the old man who helped me look for you in the very beginning,

I replied.

He knew all along,

didn't he?

He knew you were safe.

And he knew you'd find your way back when the time was right.

I wrapped my arm around her waist,

pulling her close against my side as the morning sun warmed the Chicago skyline.

Yeah,

I whispered,

May you like

smiling as I watched Sophia run out onto the terrace with our golden retriever.

He knew.
