Chapter 19 - THE UNBREAKABLE VOW

That evening,

we hosted a quiet family dinner in the penthouse dining room.

Just the three of us,

surrounded by candles,

good food,

and the gentle hum of city lights outside the glass windows.

Sophia was busy telling us all about her school play,

reenacting her role as a brave knight saving a kingdom with dramatic hand gestures that made Alina laugh out loud.

And then the dragon roared like this,

Sophia shouted,

throwing her arms wide.

And I poked him with my cardboard sword and saved the whole castle!

That sounds like a very brave knight,

I said,

smiling proudly as I poured her a glass of apple juice.

Just like my daddy,

Sophia beamed,

looking up at me with my own gray-blue eyes.

Just like your daddy,

I agreed softly,

my heart swelling with an emotion so deep it felt as though it might overflow.

After dinner,

while Alina tucked Sophia into bed and read her a bedtime story,

I walked out onto the terrace with a glass of bourbon.

The Chicago wind was cold,

carrying the crisp scent of autumn leaves from the park below.

I looked down at the glittering expanse of the city,

remembering the man I had been six years ago.

Cold,

guarded,

calculating,

and utterly alone behind a fortress of money and fear.

I had believed that power meant control over everything around you.

Now I knew the truth.

Real power wasn't about control.

It was about redemption.

It was about the courage to drop your weapons,

open your doors,

and let love walk in when you least expect it.

Alina stepped out onto the terrace behind me,

wrapping a cashmere shawl around her shoulders and sliding her arms around my waist from behind.

What are you thinking about,

Marco,

she whispered,

resting her cheek against my back.

I'm thinking about how lucky I am,

I said,

turning around in her arms and kissing her lips.

Lucky that a stubborn little girl decided to grab my leg in a cold orphanage on the West Side.

She gets her stubbornness entirely from her mother,

Alina laughed softly.

Guilty as charged.

We stood together in the moonlight,

holding each other against the chill of the night,

May you like

knowing that whatever storms might come in the future,

our family was unbreakable.
