Chapter 20

Laura watched the emotional reunion from a distance, a soft, tired smile finally breaking across her face. The immense weight she had been carrying since the moment Caleb walked into her bank felt like it was finally lifting.
Detective Harlan walked over, holding a clear evidence bag containing the encrypted hard drive and the flash drives Laura had rescued from the storage unit.
"Our tech guys already looked at the preliminary files," Harlan said, shaking his head in amazement. "This data doesn't just put Vincent away for life, Laura. It names his entire network. The corrupt city officials, the offshore banks, his distribution partners—everything. You didn't just save a family today. You dismantled a major criminal syndicate."
"I just wanted to make sure that little boy got his mother back," Laura said softly, her voice barely a whisper.
The next morning, the sun rose bright and warm over the city, casting a peaceful glow through the windows of the Citizens National Bank. The lobby was quiet, the previous day's chaos replaced by the normal, mundane rhythm of banking business.
Laura sat at her desk, a fresh cup of coffee in her hand. Her shoulder was tightly bandaged under her professional blazer, a lingering reminder of her harrowing experience.
She looked across her desk. Sitting in the center of the polished wood surface was the heavy glass jar. It was completely empty now, the coins removed for evidence processing, the glass wiped clean of dirt and dust.
Eighty-seven dollars and forty-three cents.
It was a small amount of money, but it had bought a miracle.

Laura picked up the empty jar, feeling its familiar shape in her hands. She opened her desk drawer, pulled out a fresh, shiny copper penny from a new roll, and dropped it inside. It hit the bottom with a clear, sharp, hopeful ring.
She smiled, placing the jar back on the corner of her desk, ready for whatever the future might bring.
