Part 10

The heavy leather binder struck the man squarely across the nose with a sickening crunch. He roared in pain, stumbling backward out of the storage locker, his hands flying to his bloody face.

Laura didn't waste a single millisecond. She grabbed the encrypted hard drive, the flash drives, and the map from the briefcase, shoving them frantically into her purse. She abandoned the heavy binder and the case, throwing herself forward out of the locker just as the man recovered.

He lunged for her, his face covered in blood, his eyes wild with fury. He pulled a heavy black handgun from his jacket pocket.

"You dead bitch!" he screamed.

Laura scrambled to her feet, sprinting down the dim concrete corridor of Building C as fast as her legs could carry her. A loud, deafening bang shattered the silence behind her. A bullet chipped the concrete wall right next to her ear, showering her in sharp plaster dust.

She didn't look back. She rounded the corner of the building, her chest burning, and burst out into the bright sunlight of the facility compound. She ran toward where her sedan was parked, her keys already in her hand.

Behind her, she heard the heavy footsteps of the man pursuing her, his angry curses echoing through the metal maze.

She reached her car, ripped the door open, threw herself into the driver's seat, and slammed the lock button. She jammed the key into the ignition and turned it. The engine roared to life just as the scar-faced man rounded the corner of the storage building, raising his gun toward her windshield.

Laura threw the car into reverse and slammed her foot down on the accelerator. The sedan rocketed backward, crashing loudly into a row of plastic trash bins, sending them flying.

The man fired twice more. One bullet shattered her passenger-side window, raining glittering shards of glass across the interior.

Laura shifted into drive, spun the steering wheel, and floored the gas pedal. The car surged forward, tearing down the narrow pathway toward the main exit gate. She didn't care about the closing gate anymore; she was going to ram right through it if she had to.
