Chapter 3

The plate rested squarely in front of her, the rich sauce gleaming under the crystal chandelier. Julian kept his dark eyes locked on his wife's face, refusing to blink, refusing to let her look away. The other diners had pushed their chairs back slightly, creating an invisible perimeter of tension around the head of the table.

"Julian, you're making a scene," she whispered, her voice trembling now, the diamonds at her ears catching the light as she shook her head. "In front of everyone. Think of our reputation."

"I am thinking about it," Julian replied evenly. He reached out, picking up the small silver fork from beside her plate, and held it out toward her. "Go ahead. Prove him wrong."

She stared at the silver utensil as if it were a weapon. Her breath hitched, and a single tear slipped over her dark lashes, cutting a clean path through her carefully applied makeup. It was the only confirmation Julian needed, though the realization felt like a physical blow to his chest. The fear in her eyes wasn't indignation; it was terror.

The boy in the tan button-down shirt turned quietly toward the double doors of the banquet hall, sensing the moment of realization. Julian stood up so fast his chair scraped loudly against the polished floor, the sound echoing off the high ceiling.

"Wait," Julian said, abandoning the table and taking two long strides after the boy.

The guests erupted into chaotic whispers. Security guards, finally alerted by the commotion, rushed through the doors, but Julian waved them back with a sharp gesture of his hand. He knelt down slightly to meet the boy's eyes, realizing for the first time that the child was trembling, adrenaline finally wearing off.

"How did you know?" Julian asked, his voice softening, all traces of sternness gone.

"My dad worked in the kitchens," the boy said quietly, looking back toward the woman who sat paralyzed at the head of the table. "He saw her talking to the new busboy behind the dry storage. He told me what she bought. I tried to stop him yesterday, but I was too late. I wasn't going to let it happen to you, too."

Julian closed his eyes, the pieces locking into place with devastating clarity.
