Chapter 3 - The Predator’s Trap

For three long, agonizing seconds, the only sound in the grand foyer was the slow, dripping trickle of spilled champagne soaking into the marble grout. Vanessa Thorne’s eyes darted frantically around the room, scanning the exits, the guards, and finally landing on Richard’s face. She saw no anger there—at least, not the hot, reckless anger she might have expected from an emotional father. What she saw was the dead, hollow stare of a apex predator that had cornered its prey and was simply calculating how to administer the final, fatal strike.
Vanessa’s lips parted, a desperate, practiced smile flickering across her features like a dying candle in a windstorm. She forced a light, airy laugh, though her voice hitched miserably on the first syllable.
"Richard! Oh, my goodness... you startled me," she stammered, taking a cautious step backward, only to feel her heel hit the closed elevator doors behind her with a dull thud. "I... I wasn't expecting you until tomorrow morning. The agency said—"
"The agency didn't tell you that a father’s instinct can't be bought off with a polished resume," Richard interrupted. His voice wasn't loud. It didn't need to be. It cut through the high-ceilinged room like a razor-sharp scalpel.
He took two slow, deliberate steps forward, closing the distance between them until Vanessa could feel the chill radiating off his tailored suit. She instinctively shrank back against the elevator doors, her chest rising and falling in rapid, shallow gasps.
"Richard, please," she whispered, her voice dropping into a seductive, trembling register that had undoubtedly gotten her out of tight spots with wealthy employers in the past. "Let's not be hasty. Whatever you think you saw... whatever that ungrateful little brat told you—"
Smack.
The sound was like a gunshot echoing through the penthouse. Vanessa gasped, her head snapping violently to the left as the force of Marcus Vance’s heavy hand sent her sprawling against the elevator doors. She slid down the polished metal, landing unceremoniously on her knees amidst the sparkling shards of broken glass, clutching her burning cheek with wide, disbelieving eyes.
Marcus didn't flinch. He casually lowered his hand back to his side, his face a mask of absolute professional indifference.
"Don't ever use that word to describe my daughter again," Richard said, his voice dropping into a lethal whisper as he loomed over her trembling form. "In fact, you shouldn't use words at all. You’ve abused your privilege of speech."
Vanessa looked up, tears springing to her eyes, though they were born of pure terror rather than genuine remorse. Her mascara began to run, cutting black streaks down her powdered cheeks. "You can't do this!" she shrieked, her mask of cool sophistication completely shattering into a million jagged pieces. "I have rights! This is kidnapping! I'll call the police! I'll sue you for assault—go ahead, look at my contract! There's a mandatory arbitration clause! You can't touch me!"
Richard let out a cold, humorless chuckle. It was a sound that chilled Marcus and the other operatives to the bone.
"Arbitration?" Richard repeated, raising an eyebrow as he crouched down to her eye level. He reached out and grabbed a handful of her expensive blonde hair, yanking her head back so she had no choice but to look directly into his eyes. "Vanessa, do you know what happens to people who try to hide behind corporate law in my world? I don't go to court. I don't file motions. I rewrite the laws of physics until people like you simply cease to exist."
He released her hair with a disgusted flick of his wrist, standing back up and motioning to Marcus.
"Bring her," Richard commanded, turning his back on her as he walked toward the living room. "Let's show her where she spent her days off."
"No! No, please! Richard!" Vanessa screamed, thrashing as Marcus and the second operative hauled her roughly to her feet by her arms. Her emerald evening gown ripped at the seam, exposing a tattoo of a coiled serpent on her shoulder blade—a detail conveniently omitted from her pristine Zurich background check. They dragged her kicking and screaming down the long, dimly lit hallway, past the expensive oil paintings and crystal chandeliers, straight toward the locked door at the end of the corridor.
When they reached the threshold, Marcus shoved her forward. Vanessa stumbled, her knees hitting the hard concrete floor of the containment cell with a sickening thud. She looked around the windowless, padded room, her breathing turning into hyperventilation as the reality of her situation finally sank in.
"No... not this room. Please, it's dark! It's claustrophobic!" she sobbed, clawing at the padded foam walls as if she could tear them down with her bare fingernails.
Richard stood in the doorway, blocking the exit, holding the heavy leather belt in his hand. He looped it slowly around his fingers, the brass buckle clinking with a rhythmic, hypnotic menace.
"You locked a six-year-old child in here for hours because she made too much noise," Richard said quietly, stepping into the room and closing the door behind him with a heavy, final click. "You fed her out of a dog bowl while you dined on caviar and champagne on the rooftop. You told her she was a tax write-off."
He stopped right in front of her, casting a long, imposing shadow over her cowering form.

"Now, Vanessa... let's see how well you handle the silence."
