Chapter 8 - The Price of an Empire

Julian Cross didn't look like a common criminal. With his slicked-back silver hair, sharp features, and calm, measured demeanor, he looked more like a senior managing director of a global investment bank. He stopped spinning the golden fountain pen, placed it neatly on the mahogany desk, and looked up at Richard with a polite, almost mocking smile.

"Mr. Sterling," Julian said smoothly, his voice carrying a refined British accent that grated against Richard’s raw nerves. "I must apologize for the unorthodox entry. Your biometric security is quite impressive, but a clever man always keeps a backdoor key when he builds the house."

Richard didn't flinch. He didn't reach for a weapon, nor did he yell. He simply closed the heavy oak office doors behind him, locking the deadbolt with a sharp, echoing click. The sound seemed to amuse Julian, who merely raised an eyebrow.

"You're trespassing in a building that you won't leave alive, Julian," Richard said, his voice terrifyingly quiet as he advanced slowly toward the desk.

"Oh, I wouldn't be so sure about that," Julian chuckled softly, leaning back in the executive chair and pressing a button on a small remote control he held in his left hand.

Instantly, the massive television monitor on the far wall flickered to life. The screen didn't show a security feed or a stock ticker. It showed a live, crystal-clear high-definition camera view of the master bedroom upstairs—specifically, the empty king-sized bed where Sophie had been resting just moments before.

Richard stopped dead in his tracks. His breath caught in his throat, a sudden, blinding spike of pure terror ripping through his veins. The bed was empty. The heavy comforter was tossed aside. And standing in the corner of the room, holding a small, terrified Sophie against her chest with one gloved hand while pressing a cold steel blade against her cheek with the other, was a masked operative.

Julian smiled, though his eyes remained as cold and dead as winter ice.

"You see, Mr. Sterling, men like you make one fatal mistake," Julian said, standing up smoothly from the chair and adjusting his cuffs. "You believe that because you own the buildings, the money, and the laws, you control the board. But you forget that true power belongs to those who control the pieces on the board."

Richard’s hands curled into tight fists at his sides, his fingernails digging so hard into his palms that his skin threatened to break. Every ounce of his billionaire confidence, his corporate ruthlessness, and his physical strength evaporated, replaced by the primal, helpless terror of a father whose child had been snatched from the jaws of safety.

"Let her go," Richard growled, taking a threatening step forward. "If you so much as scratch her—"

"If I scratch her, or if you make a single sudden move, my associate upstairs severs her jugular before your private security team can even reach the second floor landing," Julian interrupted, his voice cutting through the room like a jagged knife. He stepped around the desk, closing the distance between them until he was standing just inches away from Richard. "Let’s be entirely rational, shall we? Veronica Vance is currently locked in a federal holding cell. My entire agency network is being dismantled by your federal contacts. You’ve cost me millions of dollars in operational assets, Mr. Sterling."

"Name your price," Richard spat out, the words tasting like ash in his mouth. "Money, offshore accounts, corporate shares—take everything I have. Just let the girl go."

Julian let out a low, amused laugh. "Money? Mr. Sterling, I already have more money than I could spend in three lifetimes. What I want isn't your fortune."

He leaned in close, his voice dropping into a venomous whisper that sent a shiver down Richard’s spine.

"I want your empire. I want your total, unconditional public resignation from Sterling Global Industries, transferring full voting rights of your conglomerate over to my holding shell by noon today. And once that is signed and sealed, you will walk out onto the front steps of this tower, confess to corporate fraud and child neglect, and let the world watch your legacy burn to ash."

Richard stared at him in stunned disbelief. It wasn't just a shakedown; it was an execution of his entire identity.

"And if I refuse?" Richard asked through clenched teeth.

Julian turned slowly toward the live monitor upstairs, where the masked operative pressed the cold blade a fraction of an inch closer to Sophie’s trembling cheek, drawing a tiny bead of bright red blood.

Sophie let out a muffled, terrified sob that echoed faintly through the office speakers.

May you like

"Then you get to watch your daughter pay the ultimate price for your stubborn pride," Julian whispered coldly. "You have sixty seconds to decide, Mr. Sterling. The clock is ticking."
