Chapter 7 - The Digital Ghost

The private subterranean command center beneath the Sterling Tower was a fortress of glowing server racks, holographic monitors, and humming cooling units. It was a high-tech nerve center built to withstand cyberattacks, economic espionage, and physical sieges alike.
Richard strode through the heavy reinforced glass doors, his shirtsleeves rolled up to his elbows, revealing taut, muscular forearms. Marcus Vance stood before a massive curved workstation, tapping rapidly at a mechanical keyboard while three different tactical feeds flickered across the main display.
"Status," Richard demanded, stepping up beside him and placing his hands on the sleek steel console.
"We've locked down all building firewalls, biometric access points, and elevator shafts," Marcus said without looking up, his eyes darting across lines of scrolling code and encrypted data packets. "The local FBI field office is currently raiding the Elite Guardian Agency offices on Madison Avenue. They've arrested the director, but Julian Cross managed to wipe the central server core right before federal agents kicked through his office door."
"Can we trace the wipe?" Richard asked, leaning closer to the screen.
"I'm trying, but the bastard used a military-grade zero-day wiping protocol," Marcus muttered, swearing softly under his breath as a red error screen flashed across the monitor. "He scrubbed his communications, his financial accounts, and every digital footprint linking him to Veronica Vance. As far as the system is concerned, Julian Cross never existed."
Richard stared at the blank error screen, his mind racing. In the corporate world, when an adversary covered their tracks this cleanly, it usually meant they were preparing to strike back from the shadows. Julian Cross wasn't just a corrupt agency handler; he was a professional operator who knew how to manipulate high-net-worth families through fear, isolation, and systemic psychological manipulation. And now that his multi-million-dollar extortion ring was collapsing, he had nothing left to lose.
Suddenly, a sharp, piercing alarm tone trilled from the secondary diagnostics console.
Marcus slammed his hand onto a key, bringing up a flashing amber warning window. "Hold on... what is this? An external data ping is attempting to bypass our primary firewall."
"Trace it," Richard commanded instantly.
"I am, but it's bouncing through a dozen proxy servers across Zurich, Geneva, and the Cayman Islands," Marcus typed furiously, his knuckles clicking against the keys like machine gun fire. "Wait... it's not a cyberattack. It's an encrypted video stream packet. It's being routed directly to your personal executive terminal upstairs in the penthouse office."
Richard’s blood ran cold. "An incoming call?"
"More like a transmission," Marcus said, his face hardening as he turned to face his boss. "He wants to talk to you, Mr. Sterling."
Without a single word of hesitation, Richard spun on his heel, leaving the command center, and bolted for the private high-speed express elevator that led straight to the executive office on the eighty-third floor.
When the doors slid open, the grand office was dark, illuminated only by the faint blue glow of the massive floor-to-ceiling monitors overlooking the Manhattan morning. Sitting squarely in the center of Richard’s custom leather executive chair, spinning a solid gold fountain pen between his fingers, was a man.

He wore an impeccably tailored charcoal suit, silver-rimmed designer glasses, and possessed an aura of terrifying, unbothered calm. It was Julian Cross.
