Part 16

The defense Daniel put up against his extended family solidified a wall of security around their household.

However, high society functions had a way of forcing people together, regardless of personal vendettas or trauma.

The annual Crimson Gala, a massive charity event founded by Daniel’s late grandfather, was only three weeks away.

Historically, the event was the crown jewel of their family's social calendar, and attendance was considered mandatory.

Margaret had always been the chairperson of the committee, utilizing the event to display her immense social power.

But this year, because of the scandal Daniel had brought to light, her position was highly unstable.

Emily sat at the vanity table in their bedroom, looking at the heavy, gold-embossed invitation in her hands.

"We don't have to go," Daniel said, walking into the room while loosening his silk tie after a long day at the office.

"I can tell the board that we are focusing on our son, and no one will question it openly."

Emily looked at her reflection in the mirror, seeing a woman who had spent too long hiding from conflicts.

If she skipped the gala, it would look like she was defeated, as if she was too fragile to face the world.

She did not want Aunt Beatrice or anyone else to think that Margaret’s actions had broken her spirit entirely.

"No," Emily said, turning around to face her husband, a new spark of determination lighting up her eyes.

"We are going, Daniel. We built this life together, and I will not hide in my own home like a victim."

Daniel looked at her, surprise shifting into deep admiration for the resilience his wife was displaying.

"Are you absolutely sure? You know his family will be watching us, waiting for any sign of weakness or drama."

"Let them watch," Emily replied, her voice firm. "They need to see that you stand with me, completely and publicly."

She stood up and walked over to him, placing her hands on his chest, feeling the steady heartbeat underneath.

"We go together, we stay together, and we show them exactly what true family loyalty looks like."
