Part 3

The ripples of that terrifying afternoon in the nursery extended far beyond their immediate household. A few days after the first visit, Daniel received a fiery phone call from his aunt Beatrice, Margaret’s older sister. Beatrice had always been the self-appointed matriarch of the extended family, accustomed to dictates and unquestioned obedience. She wasted no time launching into a lecture, accusing Daniel of being cruel, dramatic, and disrespectful to the woman who had given him life. She demanded that he stop treating his mother like a criminal and restore the family dynamic to exactly how it used to be.
Emily sat at the kitchen island, listening to the muffled, angry vibrations coming from Daniel’s phone. A cold dread began to creep up her spine, fearing that the immense pressure from the rest of the family might cause her husband to waver. But Daniel didn’t hesitate for a single second. His posture straightened, and his jaw set into a firm, unyielding line.
"Aunt Beatrice, let me make this incredibly clear to you," Daniel said, his voice ringing with absolute authority. "You were not in that room. You did not see my wife crying on the floor, and you did not see the terror in my son's eyes. My mother committed an assault in my home. If anyone else had done what she did, they would be sitting in a jail cell right now. The only reason she isn't is because Emily showed her mercy."

There was a sudden, stunned silence on the other end of the line. Beatrice attempted to sputter an excuse, claiming that family arguments happen and things get out of hand, but Daniel cut her off instantly.
"If you, or anyone else in this family, chooses to enable her behavior or guilt-trip my wife, you will be cut off too," Daniel warned, his tone icy and absolute. "My priority is the safety and mental well-being of my wife and child. I will not tolerate a single passive-aggressive comment from anyone. You can either respect our boundaries, or you can stay out of our lives." He ended the call before his aunt could reply, leaving the room completely silent. Emily let out a breath she hadn’t realized she was holding, looking at her husband with a profound sense of gratitude. He wasn't just defending her in secret; he was willing to stand against his entire lineage to keep her safe.
