Chapter 2 - The Letter in the Stuffed Rabbit

The park was entirely still except for the soft rustle of autumn leaves scraping across the pavement. My security chief, Victor, stepped closer, his heavy frame casting a shadow over the bench. He reached out with a practiced, gentle care that surprised me for a man who had spent twenty years in the underworld.

"Boss," Victor whispered again, gesturing toward the split seam on the back of Emma’s dirty plush rabbit. "There’s paper inside."

Emma pulled the toy tighter against her small, brittle chest. Her knuckles were stark white, her breathing fast and shallow. "Please don’t take him," she sobbed, her voice barely audible above the wind. "Barnaby is all I have left."

Lily immediately slid closer to Emma, wrapping her small arms around the trembling girl's shoulders. "It's okay, Emma. My daddy won't hurt Barnaby. He's a good daddy."

I dropped to one knee on the cold earth, lowering my eyes so I wasn't towering over her. The resemblance was no longer just uncanny; it was agonizing. Every line of her frail face was a ghost of Grace—the woman who had taken half my soul with her when she died seven years ago.

"Emma," I said, keeping my voice as low and soft as humanly possible. "I promise you, no one is going to take Barnaby away. But I need to see what's hidden inside him. It might help me take care of you."

She searched my face with those striking green eyes—Grace’s eyes, devoid of deceit, trembling with a child’s raw fear. Slowly, her grip loosened. She held out the rabbit with two hands, her thin wrists looking as fragile as bird bones.

Victor carefully reached into the opened seam. His thick fingers pulled out a folded piece of thick, yellowed paper sealed inside a ziplock bag to protect it from moisture. He handed it to me without a word.

My hands, which had never trembled while holding a gun or signing million-dollar territory deals, shook as I unfolded the paper. The handwriting was unmistakably Grace's—fluid, elegant, yet strained, as if written in extreme duress.

Marcus,

If you are reading this, it means I am gone, and the worst has happened. It means Karen has abandoned our sweet Emma, just as I feared she would.

I know you are confused. I know you are hurt. You think I gave birth only to Lily on that icy night seven years ago. But I gave birth to twins.

Karen was there in the private clinic. When you were forced to leave my side to defend our family from the rival ambush, Karen stole Emma minutes after her birth. She hated you, Marcus. She blamed your world for everything, and she threatened to kill Emma if I ever told you the truth or tried to take her back. She forced me to stay silent, using our second daughter as a pawn to extract money from me in secret for years.

I paid her in silence to keep Emma alive. I spent every day of my remaining life dying inside because I couldn't bring our girls together. I was too weak, too scared of what Karen’s desperate network would do to both our babies.

Emma is your daughter, Marcus. She is Lily’s twin. Please, forgive me for keeping this secret. Protect her. Love her as you love Lily.

Forever yours, Grace

The paper felt like ice in my hands. A cold, furious fire ignited deep in my chest. Seven years. For seven years, my late wife had carried this unbearable torment alone while a ruthless relative bled her dry and hid my own blood in the dark.

"Daddy?" Lily asked, looking up at me with wide, anxious eyes. "Is she... is she really my sister?"

I looked from the letter to Emma, who was staring at me with a desperate mix of terror and hope. I reached out and gently brushed a strand of tangled, dusty hair away from her pale forehead.

"Yes, Lily," I whispered, my voice thick with emotion I hadn't allowed myself to feel in years. "She’s your twin sister. And she's coming home."
