Chapter 6 - The Shadows Strike Back

Healing, however, is rarely a straight path, and the world I inhabited did not simply vanish because I wished for peace.
Karen Vance’s arrest had sent shockwaves through the criminal underworld. Certain old rivals, sensing a potential weakness in the Blackwell empire due to my sudden withdrawal from public affairs, saw an opportunity to strike.
It happened on a rainy Tuesday evening.
I was sitting in the library, helping Emma learn to write her name alongside Lily, when the mansion's emergency red lights began to flash silently along the crown molding. The low, heavy thrum of the perimeter alarm vibrated through the floorboards.
Victor entered the room instantly, his sidearm already drawn, two heavily armed guards right behind him.
"Boss," Victor said, his expression grim. "We have a breach at the eastern gate. It’s an armed team—looks like mercenaries hired by the Moretti syndicate. They think you've grown soft."
Emma gasped, instantly pulling her knees to her chest and curling into a tight ball, her past trauma violently reignited. Lily grabbed her sister, hiding behind my chair.
"Daddy... is it the bad people?" Lily asked, her voice shaking slightly.
The anger that rose within me was absolute, cold, and razor-sharp. These men had brought violence to the one sanctuary my daughters had. They had threatened the peace I was desperately building for Emma.
I stood up, adjusting the cuffs of my suit jacket. I turned to my daughters, dropping down so I was at eye level with them both.
"Look at me, both of you," I commanded softly.
Emma looked up, her eyes wide with terror.
"Nothing in this world will ever hurt you again," I said, placing a hand on Emma's head and another on Lily's. "Victor is going to take you to the safe room below. You will be completely safe. I am going to deal with this, and then I will come back to finish our reading lesson. Do you trust me?"
Lily nodded fiercely. "I trust you, Daddy."
Emma hesitated, then reached out and squeezed my hand. "Please be careful, Daddy."
"Always," I replied.
Once the panic room doors sealed with a heavy mechanical click, guaranteeing my daughters' absolute physical safety, the gentle father vanished. Marcus Blackwell, the feared ruler of the Chicago underworld, returned.
I walked down the main staircase as the grand glass windows of the front foyer shattered. Armed men in black tactical gear burst through the entrance, weapons raised.
They expected a distracted, grieving man. What they found was a demon protecting his home.
My security force executed a flawless defense. Within seven minutes, the intrusion was entirely neutralized. The leader of the mercenary team, bleeding on the marble floor, looked up at me in absolute terror as I walked down the final steps.
"You... you were supposed to be broken..." he gasped.
May you like
I stood over him, my expression unreadable, my eyes colder than ice. "You came to my home. You frightened my daughters. Tell Moretti that if I ever see his name, his men, or his shadow anywhere near my family again, I will erase his bloodline from the face of the earth."
I didn't need to fire another shot. The message was delivered, and by midnight, the Moretti syndicate had initiated a full, frantic retreat from Chicago.
