Chapter 8 - The Sisterhood of Grace

Spring arrived in Chicago, bringing warm breezes, blooming cherry blossoms, and bright blue skies.

It was the day of the girls' eighth birthday—their very first birthday together.

The estate had been transformed into a fairyland. Pink and white ribbons fluttered from the trees, a giant carousel had been set up on the lower lawn, and dozens of children from the girls' new private school were laughing and running around the gardens.

Emma stood in front of the full-length mirror in her bedroom, wearing a white lace birthday dress that matched Lily’s exactly. I stepped into the room, holding two small velvet jewelry boxes.

"Are you ready for your party, birthday girl?" I asked softly.

Emma turned around, her face lit up with pure joy. "Daddy! Do I look pretty?"

"You look breathtaking," I said honestly, kneeling down in front of her. "Just like your mother did."

I opened the two boxes. Inside each was a matching platinum necklace featuring a delicate emerald pendant carved in the shape of a rose leaf.

"Your mother wore a necklace just like this," I explained, fastening one around Emma's neck and handing the other to Lily, who had just skipped into the room. "When you put them together, they form a complete rose."

Lily immediately held her pendant against Emma's. The two pieces clicked together seamlessly with a soft magnetic touch.

"We're two halves of the same heart!" Lily cheered, hugging Emma tightly.

Emma looked at her reflection in the mirror, touching the green stone resting against her collarbone. "Daddy?"

"Yes, sweet heart?"

"I used to think that being invisible was the only way to be safe," she said softly, looking up at me with profound clarity in her bright green eyes. "Aunt Karen told me that if people saw me, bad things would happen. But now I know that being seen by you and Lily is the best thing in the whole world."

I pulled both of my daughters into a deep, long embrace, hiding the tears of overwhelming gratitude that filled my eyes. "You will never have to hide again, Emma. You are loved, you are wanted, and you belong here."
